Malicious users can easily capture information transmitted over an open wireless network. To prevent unauthorized access to your personal information it needs to be encrypted.

To secure your wireless network some kind of encryption must be enabled on that network, whether it is WEP, WPA-PSK (or MAC Access Control List). The most used method (and easiest to configure) is WEP.

Configuring WEP:

  1. Connect a computer to any one of the four LAN ports of the Belkin wireless router.
  2. Open your web browser and type the router IP address of the router (by default, the address is http://192.168.2.1.) in the address bar and press Enter.
  3. Click Login on the top of the page to login to the router. By default the Password is left blank, click Submit.
  4. Click Security under Wireless menu.
  5. Under Security, Select 64 bit WEP (or 128 bit WEP).
  6. Select Key 1 and enter any 10 hexadecimal digits - any combination of 0-9, A-F (26 digits if you selected 128-bit as the encryption strength). You may also enter a pass phrase and have the router generate a key for you.
  7. Apply the settings. Please write down the key – You will need it later to configure your wireless computers with the same key.
Any other questions, let me know.

Cheers,
Nick

Having an issue getting my laptop connected to the internet. The wireless networks appear and it shows that i am connected to the linksys, however i get a dns server issue when i try to go online. It shows...

Hi,
I see that your having issues with you wireless connection, you mentioned that it is an old model Router that has a B wireless signal and that you are connected to the Router but you get an Error about the DNS having issues, try checking your Routers Network Key, make sure that your Network Key in the Laptop and Router are the same.
- to get in your Belkin Router you must type in your Default Gateway on you browser ex. IE, Firefox 192.168.2.1 then press enter after typing your Belkin's Default Gateway you should get a window prompting you for a user name and password
mvincentc_15.jpg

your user name would be admin and the password leave it blank then press enter unless you have changed the user name and password setting of your Belkin.
- check under wireless and security to see your Network Key/Security Key and copy what you have in you router and use it on your laptops network security to be able to access internet from your Belkin Router.
Hope this helps.

How do i turn off my security for my belkin wifi?

Open INTERNET EXPLORER and. (In the URL address field), enter the IP address for your wireless router ( the DEFAULT GATEWAY. This information should be contained in your router's manual. If you cannot find it, enter "198.168.1.1" as the address. This is usually the default IP address for most routers.do not type "www" just the number
Enter the username and password for your router. This should also be supplied in the router's manual. If you don't have this information, go to routerpasswords.com and find the brand and model of your router. This site lists the default login information for most wireless routers you can try "ADMIN" for user name and "PASSWORD" for passsword.
You should now be able to see your wireless router settings. You can configure your network ports, as well as SSID (wireless network name) and passwords.

Securing my belkin router with a network key

ok...
first you need to find the default gateway of the router,u need to do this settings in the computer which is wired to the router, securing the network over a wireless connections is not suggested..
click on start, run, and type in cmd,hit enter,a black box should appear in that box type in ipconfig and hit enter, once you hit enter it will give u a lot of results check the default gateway the generic default gateway is 192.168.2.1,might be different in your case incase if you have setup in a different manner, now open an internet explorer page and remove the website name that present in the addess box,now without http or www type in the numbers,it will tell you to put in the user name and password, username is admin and password is blank (this is generic to all the belkin routers provided you have not changed it earlier,if u ave changed it then put in the user name and password that you have setup, now it should open a belkin router page, now in that router page you will see an option that will says wireless, under wireless you will see an option that says security, click on security, and then under security page you will see security mode, from here you can use the security type that you want to use and then save the changes once it has saved the changes you wireless netwokr will be secured.

PS:make sure the computer is connected with a wire to the router when we are setting the security in the wireless network....

Generally access the router control panel panel putting router ip number on internet explorer bar. You will be asked for passwords. Check IP number and password for your model on manual.
On panel go to wireless then security, you find menus at left and top bar of the router control page in internet explorer.
Set encryption and input the password.

I am trying to secure my belkin wireless G router

WEP/WPA is an encryption you can enable on your wireless router to keep others off your wireless network as well as secure communications between users and the wireless side of the router.

A copy of the manual can usually be downloaded from the manufacturers website. Looking at the bottom of the router will give you model number, serial number, and version information you'll need to get the manual.

Each router is a bit different then the next, most come with a cd that will help you setup security. But all of them I have seen so far have web interfaces you can access by typing in the 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 ip address in your address bar.

Most default logins are admin/admin or admin with no password
