You need to upgrade you ingest system. Windows Media Player(and your system card) probably can't handle the load. Try "Scenalyzer" it's economical, versatile and stable( http://scenalyzer.com/).

SOURCE: connecting camcorder to computer

if this doesnt have USB interface, you need a USB Audio and Video Combo Adapter. something like this http://www.computercablestore.com/USB_Audio_and_Video_Combo_PID1600.aspx for optimum video performace, use S video connector. let me know if you have question.

Has your firewire worked with any other application? Here's a blog with some discussion about the problem, but they claim that running XP, the firewire should be detected automatically, and the drivers installed.
Here's a web blog that might help:

Here's some things to try from this site:

Try their suggestions, and if you're still having problems, you might contact Canon support here:

Good luck, and hope this helps.

I can't get out of demo mode. It's greyed out and unchangeable. How do I remedy this? Thank you!

The demo mode starts automatically when the camcorder is powered with the power adapter only if you leave it turned on without loading a recording media for more than five minutes.
The cancel the demo mode once it started, press any button, turn off the camcorder or insert a videocassette.

Canon zr960 will not read tape or record new footage. Cleaned head but no luck. worked fine for past year

This is most likely caused by a damaged or misaligned video drum and can usually be repaired fairly inexpensively. However, it's not a user serviceable problem and will need to be repaired by a qualified service technician.

My name is Rick and I'm a professional repair technician with over 20 years in the business and have repaired many of these. I'm semi retired and work from home with little overhead so I can keep repair costs low. If you decide to have the camera repaired, please click HERE for a directory listing that suits your needs.

Tips in buying auctioned canon zr45mc mini dv camcorder

Don't buy it. Buy a real "digital" camcorder with a hard drive. You want one that you can simply upload video from camcorder to your computer using USB. This piece of **** needs firewire cable and to "record" to your computer using software. Don't use mini dvds, they are stupid. Just get a camcorder with a hard drive.

How do I transfer a recorded tape to my computer

You need IEEE (Firewire) or "DV" cable to transfer video from the camcorder to your computer. The connection is "DV" and is located on the front of the camera next to the "S" port. The marketing for this camera was deceiving...most customers thought they could hook up the USB to their computer and upload video...well you can't
