Technics receiver SA AX540 overheating

I have a problem of my receiver overheating. It is on for approx. 10 minutes and the sound shuts down. I've tried to troubleshoot it by the manual but have no luck. I've pushed the help button and it just reads "high temp". I turned it on 2 hrs later, and had no sound and the same reading. What could this be?

Is the fan turning on? many models like these have a cooling system (fan) that kicks up when the volume is turned to a certain level. if your fan has never been on, then chances are some of your soldering points have shifted or gotten a little messed up over time from the heating/cooling effect. this model runs extremely hot especially right where the vent is on the top of the cabinet. make sure that it is not in a shelf or enclosed area. dont stack other items on top of it. use an external device to control the volume so that you can have the receiver volume at a fixed level where the fan will turn on. if your sound still doesnt work, you should consider buying a new receiver or try your local craigslists forum. make sure if you buy a new one, that it is a more expensive model from a brand like sony and check the model online for known problems. stores like best buy offer extended warranties on most of their products which are very wise investments. good luck sinbad

Technics SA-AX540 Receiver

It is unlikely that the display itself is faulty although it can happen. The typical problem is either the backlight is defective or the suply to the unit has a bad connection. If you can solder, try resoldering the pins on the display itself. The pins on the ends are the power and ground. I don't recall whether or not your model has a separate back light bulb or not. That too could be burned. Chack for that too.
