SOURCE: trying to install a hassle free trimmer head on a

I had the same problem today. Store told me part 71 85740991 would work.
It does not have same shaft to attach. The original has a plastic head which
melts with use and will not work. I feel it is a defective device. They have a replacement part that does work for a while and does the same thing. Sears
should provide a proper head. A higher priced machine has a proper head.
I would like to by the better shaft and head which I think would fit this machine
but am told you can'[t buy. I'm very discouraged with them. Then engine runs fine.

If you find a solution I would like to hear from you. Thank you.

I am not finding your trimmer right off the bat but, these units have a drive cable in them joined with plastic couplings. More than likely you have a rounded out coupling and/or a broken cable. You have to make sure, however, that the shafts are joined together all the way to make sure the cable can engage the coupling, Loosen the knob on the shaft and separate the two pieces, see if the cable spins when you run the trimmer. If it spins without lower end on, try putting back togrther and see what happens. If the cable was spinning when apart, the problem is in the lower half.

pull off string housing check that all parts are there. run machine and see if shaft is turning-- if it is then put housing back on sometimes I havent put the housing on properly. if shaft is not turning. then repair is needed. or just buy a new one. cost of repairs on this stuff is not worth the cost. unless it's a profesional grade machine..

Barely used weed wacker head stopped turning clutch seams loose has play can i unscrew the clutch?allen wrench??

If your clutch is spinning you more than likely have broken the drive shaft that goes down to the head. it is fairly common with craftsman weed trimmers.

I need to replace the head on this 32cc weed wacker and the bolt shaft keeps spinning keeping me from putting on the new head. Am I missing something?

There is normally a large alloy nut that goes on first, it sits ont the two short flats on the output shaft so as to be able to hold the shaft to fit/ or remove the trimmer head.

My troy bilt weed wacker started to make a rattling noise from the engine a couple of weeks ago. Now the head has stopped turning, it appears that the drive shaft is not turning.

sounds like something came look in the clutch assembly. you have to remove the shaft from the power head and take a look inside the cover.

McCulloch mt 700 weed wacker, the weed wacker will not spin to cut the weeds

If the motor is running another possible solution is you have a broken drive shaft spring PN-753-04280 To check this remove the screw which holds the **** pipe to the motor and loosen the clamp. The **** pipe should pull right off the motor exposing the end of the drive shaft spring. Pull the end of the spring, if it comes out it is broken.
