The fans on my Toshiba DLP frequently make a loud humming noise, as if something is vibrating that should not be. I am not sure if it is the bulb fan, or the ballast fan, but the noise continues after I turn the TV off until it cools down. So, I am assuming it is the bulb fan. The noise does not happen all the time. There are times when I turn the TV on and hear the normal sound of the fan instead of the loud buzzing. There will be times when I do not hear the loud fan noise initially but then will it hear it later after the TV has been on a while. And there are times when I hear the loud buzzing sound of the fan right away. I did have the buld and ballast fans replaced recently for this reason and now the new fan(s) are making the sound. What could be the probable cause of this (loose mounting screw, crappy fan, etc.) and is there an easy solution to this? Is there an upgrade that can be done with the fans?
I constantly hear complaints about fan noise in dlptvs if you sit in front of your computer you will hear the same noise even in the next room there is no solution to the fan noise problem this product has a huge cage fan and a second and third three inch fans in it.... more than the samsung product it can be noticeable if the tv is on hard surfaces ie wood floors ,inthe corner, glass top etc the vents on the back of the tv allow for proper cooling of the lamp at shutoff so it doesnt shatter the tube its kinda like annealing glass its designed to extend the life of the lamp .... which im sure youve priced call toshiba and tell them your lamp is bad right now and get a new one for an emergency ( warranty if you can do it ) they are also improved this product is known to have short bulb life sometimes the zinging noise you hear is indicative of a bad color wheel in the light engine which would require replacement ( not cheap) toshiba will not piece out the color wheel assembly individually

Yes, the problem is the color wheel. Those are not sold by toshiba alone. You have to buy the light engine from them (a lot of $$$)
I found color wheel for sale on eBay. Just type "toshiba color wheel” and you will see them there. They are little wider then the original buy fit perfect and seem to last much longer too.
OK there is always a solution to a noisy fan problem, if a fan is noisy it either needs oil or it has something in it or touching it...for example I Had to change my color wheel on my Toshiba 42HM95 and when I started the TV again It was making that loud humming even when i shut it off, what I did was turn the TV around removed the back panel and saw that some wires i didn't tie up properly were touching the cable card fan. (obviously don't touch anything while the TV is plugged in or you will die) tied them up properly and wha-la noise gone.
IF you can determine where the noise is coming from you can most likely fix it by taking out the fan cleaning it and oiling it, or removing what is touching it. or you can replace it. FYI smoking is very bad and causes a lot of fan and instrument problems with DLP TVs. Look up videos on you-tube regarding replacing parts in DLP TVs (VERY HELP FULL) other noise problems can be your color wheel or light bulb. those are very common obviously.
UUUUggggghhhh I have a 1 year old Toshiba 50" DLP rear projection and it had fan noise. It also had a wierd dark spot on the screen that really wasn't on the screen itself. I was taken to a service center and held captive for 2-3 weeks and returned with a new light engine. I thought great! 3 weeks to a month later and bordering on expiration of warranty it starts to make a low screeching sound like a small motor in need of lubricant. The picture jumps all over and resembles a 256 color PC Monitor. The service center comes and picks it up and holds it captive for another 2.5 weeks and says they cannot duplicate the problem. I had even sent them a quicktime movie of it in action.
They drop it off and an hour goes by and off she goes again. Now the longer I leave it on the worse it gets and shuts itself down and sometimes blinks the "light engine" code. Spoke with Toshiba and they are escalating it and should hear back in 3 days... OMG. Kinda off on a tangent, but they do make strange noises.
Did Toshiba get out of the DLP game???

I have a 62 in DLP and the fan is too loud! I can hear it over the volume. I think its the fan getting old, dirty or just needs some oil. Just like the fans in our PC\'s....after a while they are loud. Also, I agree with one of the posts here....smoking is hard on electronics that have fans as they draw in the smoke and collect residue on the internal components. Pull the cover off your PC and see the brown from the cigarette smoke. I have a PC die because I smoke. TV\'s aren\'t much different. Try cleaning and oiling the fan. It will run quieter. (Unplug TV and MAKE SURE you discharge any static electricity from your body BEFORE going into your TV touch ANY parts!

However, there are two situations for the sound I hear:there is the normal sound which is like the fan sound you hear from a PC, and there is an extreme "buzzing" or vibrating sound that happens every now and then. I can usually get the sound to stop if I shut down the TV and let it cool down until the fans stop turning. Then when I turn the TV back on, the extreme noise has stopped and I hear the normal fan sound. It is definitely a mechanical vibrating sound and I also feel more vibrations on the cabinet when it is making this extreme sound compared to when it is normal. I believe it is one of the fans since the sound stops when the fans shut down, unless the color wheel also continues to spin while the fans spin when the tv is shut down.

I am having the same problem with the fan noise! When I turn on the tv there is a very loud fan noise and then it settles (of different) into a hum that isn't heard unless show is very quite. Do I have to replase the unit that contains the color wheel (expensive!!)? If I do not replace, will it cause further damage?
I have the same problem, I have a loud humming coming from the cooling fan from the bulb. I have taken off the cover and it is the cooling fan for the bulb. What is the easiest way to fix? Anyone?
My problem sounds like everyone else. loud buzzing from the fan in the back of the TV by the bulb. I have the Toshiba 62in DLP as well. Do I need a new fan or bulb?
Same symptoms as other posters, humming sound, evident at low volume levels and during the cool down phase of turning off the TV.
Thought it might be an accumulation of dust on the fan blades but haven't checked yet.
The problem I had on my 52HMX95 actually turned out to be the color wheel making the noise. Unfortunately, Toshiba does not part out the color wheel and requires a new optical engine. Fortunately, my Toshiba warrantied this part and the service (my warranty expired a couple of months before this happened). Yeah, this optical engine is pricey! Somewhere in the $500 park!
I think Toshiba did get out of the DLP game since all I have seen of thier latestes models have been LCD.
Does anyone know if there are LED DLP lamps avaible for these Toshibas?? I know Samsung (Ithink) has LED lamps for thier DLPs, but I was wondering there were any third party LED lamps avaible for ours.
I own the Toshibs 42HM66 DLP Projection MESS also. Just after the warranty ran out so did the bulb. After replacemnt and six months later one the fans on start up groans almost as loud as my hotrod pickup... You do not want to know what I told Toshiba. Feeling somewhat satisfied, I still need the fan. does anyone know where to get one before I take two asprin and get a crowbar. Thanks In advance for any help with this.

Hi, i have a 62" and am on my 3rd bulb, i also have to turn the volume up to 50 to override the whirring noise emulating from the cooling fan(s), and no, it's not a "normal" fan noise like a PC, Power Amp, or other devices which require . i'm going to call Toshiba tomorrow and see what they say.

I have a 56" Toshiba DLP and the humming noise is really loud. I had the back cover off and I am fairly certain that the fan is the culprit. I wonder if replacing the fan will solve the problem. Anyone talk to Toshiba about getting a replacement fan?Â
Yea I found out what is it. It's the color fan motor that make the noise. It's not the fan on the back of the tv. What I did is that I took the hole base of the tv off and I disable the the box that lead to color fan try that. You will now know where it's comming from. Try it
