Poulan Wood Shark Chainsaw - wood smoking. Is chain on backwards?

I just finished cleaning my chainsaw - took off the cover and then put it all back together. I started cutting some decayed red wood fence that we are replacing. The saw was not cutting through it very well. Is my chain old? Do I have the chain on backwards, which I don't think is the case, but I can not find a picture anywhere. Please help. Thanks.

Is there a site on line for directions on how to clean the air filter? I am pretty handy for following directions, but unfortunately I lost the paperwork for this machine. Thanks so much for your help.

I cannot tell you about a picture, but for one: chain direction, the bottom of the bar is where the cutting takes place, and therefore, looking at the chain, you will see, on the bottom, the antikick back link is sort of curved, and then the next part is the straight tooth. The highest part of this straight tooth is the sharp edge, and this high part should face towards the motor. The chain, on the bottom side of the bar, is pulled in towards the motor by the clutch/gear. That is your direction of travel.

As to cleaning the air filter, Hopefully you have access to compressed air, as in simply blowing off the dirt. You do not want to use liquid cleaner. Simply blow off any dirt, after pulling the filter away from the carburetor, of course. Then place it back in place.

It may be that your chain is real dull. The top edge of the high part of the flat tooth needs to be sharp. And the outside corner needs to come to a nice point. Remember, there is two cutting surfaces on each tooth, the top is cutting down into the wood, and also that outside sharp corner is openning the cut for the bar to pass through. Proper sharpening, if new to it, can be hard to grasp. Any chainsaw manual should show how to do a good job.

Your chain may need to be sharpened or replaced. However if it feels like the saw just doesn't have enough power to cut the wood you probably need to clean the air filter.

There are not instuctions online. They are in the manual. However they are fairly easy. You just take the air filter off and wash it in hot soapy water. After washing it you let it air dry. Then re attach to your saw. Hope this works for you!

I'm sorry about what I typed last night. I did find a way to download a new manual from the internet. You can do this by going to the Poulan website. In the manual it tells you how to wash the air filter.

I feel stupid I was doing some work for the neighbour I am also a mechanic and an experienced person with my chainsaw I have not made a mistake like this for a while In my case I flipped the bar upside down this made the chain which was brand new stop cutting wow what an idiot I looked at it and eventually figured it out the words were upside down my clue always remember the bar is directional the arrows point the direction of the rotation and the sharp edge is traveling away from the saw on the top and towards the saw on bottom

Mt999 chainsaw. Brand new. Not cutting through wood although blade rotating. Just seems to be burning wood.

If it's all brand new, then sounds like you have the chain on backwards. The angled parts of the cutters should face forward while on the top of the bar.

Try to squirt a little gas in the carb and see if it pops or tries to run for a short time. The diaphram in the carb is probably old and hard. That would be the first place I would look.

Are you sure you reset the brake?

Remove the starter cover, does it rotate when pulled? If yes reinstall it.
Pull the chain brake fully aft, does the saw rotate? If yes your problem is solved. If no did you put oil in the gas before you put it in the tank? If yes or no elevate this to your friendly neighborhood chainsaw seller/mechanic. HTH

The chain is directional, only cuts one way. If a new chain won't cut, it must be on backwards.
