When I put a normal size. 12" lp on it sounds like chipmunks even though size is set to 30 and speed 33.. when it's turning it doesn't make any change at all to the sound if you switch these around. No matter what size speed combo is selected it just does the chipmunk thing. Also the Start button only works intermittently..I usually have to manually get it spinning. Thanks for any advice
SOURCE: Sony PS-LX250H speed problem
I have a different Sony model (PS-LX-150H) that had a similar problem. I hadn't used it in awhile, and then when I did, I noticed the speed problem.
IF your PS-LX250 is like my PS-LX150, there are small speed adjustment screws accessible from the bottom of the unit. On mine, the two adjustment screws were labeled - one for 33rpm, the other for 45 rpm. Basically I just fiddled a bit with them using a very small precision screw driver until I could verify that I had reached 33 rpm (I used a stopwatch and literally counted the number of rotations/minute after making adjustments.)
Now it sounds right!

Not sure what made it happen all of a sudden, but you might want to check out Mocamom1 's question related to PS-LX250H speed & the attached solutions. You may just need to adjust the SW screw on the underside of the unit (worked for mine that was playing everything at 35 1/4!)

The motors are a common problem with this
model! Replace it to correct but I suspect the
motor regulator ic which is not avalible is the
real problem!
SOURCE: How do I manually adjust
Without technical equipment it would be near impossible to get the speed down to the level of a CD. A lot depends on the belt, how much it has been used, for example a new belt might help! The motor of the deck could have a speed setting on it, but even so it would be on the bottom of the deck and you would have to adjust while you were under the turntable. Like being under a car!
Some have speed presets, again under the deck, often covered with a label. Others will have them on the PC board of the deck's power supply section.
On the whole that's one of the flaws with records and decks, they are not as good as CD's.
SOURCE: My Sony PS-LX250H turntable will only spin at
I have the exact same problem for the same model. Only spins at 45 and I sometimes have to kick-start it. I tried de-activating the switch (so that it's not making a connection) and therefore in the 33 position but that does not help.
