could be what they call the inverter thats gone..or your screen has gone..to find out if its your screen thats faulty just put another monitor to your laptop using a vga cable ,if your windows show on the monitor then its your laptop screen or the inverter thats gone.

reset resolution to a lower setting try 1024x768 if that doesn't work try reinstalling windows as long as the same issue is not present in the dos start up screen then its windows based

As by your description, your mainboard of the laptop is faulty as the unit fails to produce a good picture on both its own LCD and on a external LCD

i assume that when you start the machine you are getting the correct screen (Acer preboot screen) if that is working, then you should check the resolution, simple way is to start the computer in VGAmode, press F8 while starting the computer and select the VGA mode, this will start the computer in 800*600 resolution. then change the screen resolution to the 1024*600. this should fix the issue.

Here is another thing you can try. Unplug the power cord, and then remove the battery. Press the "Start" button and hold for 5 seconds.
