My HP Pavillion A220N desktop turns on but will not give me access to the monitor, mouse or keyboard

I opened it up and found a little cylinder spring switch about 3/4 of an inch long and think that it needs to be put back back where it belongs because I know the keyboard, mouse and monitor are good. Anybody know what this is and where this little switch goes? The fans run and the cd/dvd lights turn on but no other access. Real answers, not guesses please. I have lots of stuff on this HP that didn't get backed up to my IBM.

SOURCE: HP desktop monitor problem

hi try this ,,,

  1. Ensure the video cable is connected (and connected to the correct video port).
  2. Turn off the monitor using the monitor's power button and then restart the monitor.
  3. Cycle the power on the monitor as follows:
  4. Turn off the monitor. The power light on the monitor should be off. Leave the computer turned on.
  5. Unplug the power cord.
  6. Wait 5 seconds.
  7. Plug in the power cord.
  8. Press the power button on the monitor to turn on the monitor. One of two things happens:
    1. The image from the computer displays on the monitor and you can use the computer again. This indicates that the monitor was unable to detect that the computer had awakened from suspend mode. Turn the monitor off when it is not being used or disable suspend mode. For some computers, updating the BIOS corrects these types of suspend problems.
    2. The power light on the monitor comes on but the screen displays one of the messages again. The monitor is not receiving a video signal from the computer that it can detect and use. Continue using these steps to adjust the Windows display resolution to the Monitor's native (default) resolution
    3. Connect the monitor to another computer that you know is working to determine if the monitor should be serviced or replaced:
      • If the monitor displays an image from another computer, you know that the monitor works. Troubleshoot the video connection and graphics adapter on the computer.
      • If the monitor remain blank when connected to another computer, the monitor signal processing hardware may be bad. The monitor should be repaired or replaced.
hope it will work for u .. little_angel

check the fan (top rear of the computer) , make sure it runs when you start the computer. if it is NOT running the power supply may be the cause.
also you may need to remove the case and inspect the fans inside. you shoulkd be able to remove a couple phillips head screws on the back of the computer and lift the cover off or at least the side making the guts of thhe computer visible.
once open , inspect all the fans and cables, especially the fan on the main board and the metal piece with fins undernieth it, this tends to collect dust causing the cpu below to overheat and shut down the syatem to protect itself. The number one cause of crashes is overheating.
look at these things to start and post your findings and we'll move on to another step.

Simple replace the video card and be done with it. The video went out and froze up that is why you had to do the shut down the card right then. If you get another card that should solve the matter. That is all I would suggest to you at this time any loose parts remove them and located anything that is missing or should be there.

HP Pavillion won't bring monitor back from sleep mode

hi...if u can read " no input signal" from ur screen, this means that ur monitor is ok..
Look if u have power buttons on ur keyboard.. try to wake it from there.. some pc may have shortcut keys to bring back the pc... look @ ur pc docs on the internet for more info...
However if it's a hardware issue, it may be that ur RAM memory needs to be cleaned

HP Slimline Pavillion s3123w monitor going to sleep.

Sounds like the motherboard might be bad but go thru these steps.

Unseat and reseat the memory one stick at a time in each slot one at at time and turn on the computer after each stick reinsertion.

If that doesn't get the video to come back up then go ahead and unseat and reseat the CPU. Then try turning on the computer.

If that doesn't do it, make sure there is no power going to the hard drive or the dvd drive. Then try turning on the computer.

If you do all of these steps and you still have no video, then the motherboard is bad and would need to be replaced.
