I have the cord for the camera, but cannot locate the wall adapter part. Can I use another USB wall plug (like a universal one or Apple wall USB jack)? When I plug in the camera, the green light flashes slowly, then rapidly, then ceases. I always have problems with these cameras, but when I return them, I have to get the same one
Check the output Amperage on the original dedicated charger and what you wanna use as replacement.
Some devices does not like over amperage and others the under amperage...
Otherwise it shouldn't affect anything if you use other chargers.

You need to give some additional information. What OS are you using? USB, with all newer OS's is native and you shouldn't have to have any special drivers or software to get the camera detected by the computer. Simply plug it in and go to "My Computer" and it should be seen. If this is not the case, start with the physical connections first. Check the USB cable between the two. if a 2nd cable does the same thing, check a different device with the same cable and connection port on the computer. If the port works, and it recognizes another device, you have to look at the camera. If it doesn't recognize the 2nd device, look at the port on the computer. If ANOTHER port doesn't work, go into the Hardware device manager and ensure that USB ports have not been disabled. If it's the camera, chances are the port has died. If this is the case and you don't want to trade the camera in, try getting a $30 card reader and place the data card into the reader to ensure that the card isn't the issue. The reader will ensure that you can transfer the images and will also save some wear and tear on your camera.

On a coolpix 100, the default setting is that the camera is charged by the computer through the USB cable. You need switch that OFF.
While the camera still does not show as usb device, you can access it through the Nikon transfer program AND through iPhoto

I faced the same problem too. But I realised that after plugging in the adapter and connecting it to the camera, you would need to press the power button but not turn it on.
