HP Officejet 6310 All-in-One ''Cartridge Error: Cartridge on ...''

I switched the printer on yesterday morning and had theimmediate display "Cartridge Error: Cartridge on left must be replaced”. The cartridge was new (ish) but I replaced it and got exactly the samemessage. I followed the electrical contacts cleaning tips from HP - nodifference. Someone posted a tip of removing the left (colour) cartridgeand this has allowed me to use the printer in black and grey scales, which is adefinite improvement.
Sometime prior to this problem I allowed a download of a program update for the HP. I also tried the HP with the PC turned off but got the same message.

I did un-install the whole of the HP software and re-installed it through the original disk. I thought it was OK when the printer asked for 'page alignment' and went through the process and printed its alignment page in colour and black and white.
When if finished a message came up that the left cartridge was incorrectly installed, should be removed and refitted. After this it was all downhill. Same error message as before and the only way to use the printer is to take out the left (tri-colour) cartridge.
Any further appropriate suggestions gratefully received.

Same problem here... it tells me to replace my color toner. It works if I remove the color toner, but keep getting the same message when I put the color toner back in.

  • Anonymous Dec 02, 2008

I have the same problem. Everything was fine until the "cartridge error" report came on. I tried several fixes, restart, reinstall cartridge, etc. I called HP Tech Support. They ultimately concluded the internal chip had failed and offered to replace the 6310 with a new 6310 for $97.00. Not sure what I will do at this point.

  • lamberti51 May 15, 2009

Same error message. How do you get the printer to work wothout the left cartridge installed?

  • Anonymous May 17, 2009

I turned on the printer and it began its catridge check, almost immidatly it says "cartridge on left must be replaced." I know the cartridge is not empty, its still fairly new.

once the error message comes up, it refuses to print. I've alredy tryed cleaning the contacts on both the cartridge and the printer and still no improvement...

    help please

No solution, just concern that this has happened to others.
We have two 6310 HP printers. Getting error in one printer. Can take the cartridge to the other printer and it works fine.
Have tried 3 different color cartridges - all work in one of the 6310 HP Printers, all give error in the other 6310 printer.
My daughters printer is the one giving the error. Not sure when she bought it.
I think it's time to buy a different printer.
-- Thanks for posting your problems. I was going to take apart the printer and look for a loose wire, but it sounds like a defect from HP.

I am using a Dell Inspiron PC running Vista Home Basic. I was using a substitute Black 337 cartridge with extra ink which I had bought from Phoenix -- this has worked successfully for weeks. I had theCartrdige Error problem for the first time today.

I seem to have resolved the problem by unplugging the USB cable from the HP Officejet 6310 printer, uninstalling all the HP software, reinstalling the HP software from the disc and then plugging in USB cable. I then bought a new HP Black 337 Cartridge and on installing it, the printer displayed "genuine black printer cartridge installed" and all now works OK.

Interestingly a few days back the printer was only printing the upper half of letters (Arial 11) on every third line. HP asked me to use the drivers for the HP 990c printer which soved the problems !!!

Hi guys, this page helped me a lot. But it does not work as a permanent fix. To change the Printer Region code at least on the 6310 you need to call HP (need to be able to print a Printer settings page, they will step you through it) and based on the info you provide from the printed page, they have a key generator that you input into your PC printer preferences that will change the region code.

By the way it does not work all the time...but it did for me :)

Wipe the ink cartridge connection side with alcohol and a tissue or q-tip and try again. If still having problems rub with an eraser and then the alcohol again. If still have the problem, remove both cartridges, pull the pwr plug and hold down OK and cancel buttons for 10 sec while plugging it back in. Printer will reset to out of the box new. Turn on and install cartriges and do an alignment.

How do we change the ink cartridge on a HP 6310?

Hi kscherington,
The short version. Grab the bottom of the cartridge, which is under the printers display window. Pull up & the hole scanner bed and keyboary assembly will lift up as one. Keep the power turned on while doing this. Once opened the ink carridge will move to the right where you can replace your cartridge.
You can go to pg. 96 through pg. 99 in your manual.
