The lighting on the control panel of my Thermadore double, electric oven has gotten dim and hard to read can you give me any advice on repairing this problem? 220 volt 40 amp three wire connection. Purchased in 2003 new, had control panel replaced after 6 months service, in 2004.
The cap replacement worked....saving $250 (every 2 years !!!) I posted it on another site...now its making its way around the web....its the only value added thing I've done on the web (sadly!).
You have to know how to solder.
Clip the 3 caps out carefully on the top side of the board.
Use the soldering iron on the solder side to melt the solder - while GENTLY putting a pulling force on the top side stub thats left with some long nose pliers....pop out each of the stubs . Line up one of the new caps with the holes and hold and push GENTLY. Heat the bottom pads to allow the leads to pop through (one by one)...then add solder to the solder side to reflow the part to the pad...repeat..

I just replaced two of the capacitors and it worked thank God. I couldn't get at the 3rd capacitor with the soldering iron because the display blocks it and I couldn't see how to remove the display unit. We had already begun shopping for a new double oven. This was the last resort. The capacitors were $1.78 apiece at an electronics store. A repairmen quoted us a $780 fix - with him shipping the parts out to be rebuilt because Thermador is out of business and not producing parts anymore. There is a great place in Canada called Appliancetimers.com which will rebuild the timer for you inexpensively ($109) but they also want you to send the Power Relay Board which requires removal of the double oven to get at it. We found that it was much too heavy to consider that solution.

They use a vacuum flourescent display. Its driven from voltages from a Transformer - and capacitors used to stabalize those voltages. I was told by a tech that the capacitors are notorious for going bad due to the heat that the boards see. I am planning on taking the board out and replacing all the capacitors first. If its not them...then its the transformer. In a dim light I can see that the info is correct ...the flourecent part isn't bad - it has to be the voltages used to emit electrons from the filament, or the voltage on the grid that is used to accelerate them toward the flourescent display.....stay tuned.
Our Oven just started with this problem tonight and we were looking to find out what the fix was. Our oven still works great but the display is just dim. Do you know where to find the Model # for the oven we bought a floor model in 2002 and we did not get an owners manual for it. Any help would be great.
Thanks
model SC301T display slowly went dim until it went out.
Oh wow...I have the Thermador Built in Ovel Model SCD302 and my control Panel display window was dim and now it is completely out! My oven is only 3 years old! Very disappointing! I heard that the control panel must be replaced in its entirety but I will stay tuned! Thanks!
