Follow this procedure to enable the special buttons or function keys on the computer or keyboard in the Microsoft® Windows® XP operating system.
IMPORTANT:

  • If software has been installed for use with a third-party keyboard or mouse, uninstall the software to ensure there are no conflicts.
  • On AMD™ or Transmeta™ processor-based computers, the function keys are hardware controlled and not controlled by a hot-key utility.
NOTES:
  • The volume button, brightness key, and disc eject button on some computers will not work if the HotKey Utility application is not running.
  • The Magnify button and the Fn keys will not function properly before the operating system has finished starting.
  • The setting may not be saved if the ESC key is used to close the Fn display. Press the ENTER key or allow the Fn display to close automatically to save the setting.
  1. Click the Start button, then click Run .
  2. In the Run window, next to Open , type MSCONFIG .
  3. Press the ENTER key.
  4. In the System Configuration Utility window, click the Startup tab.
  5. On the Startup tab, under Startup Item , ensure that there is a check in the HKserv checkbox. NOTE: If HKserv is missing, reinstall the HotKey Utility application and the Sony Utilities Library.
  6. Click the OK button.
  7. In the System Configuration box, click the restart button.

My Sony vaio vgc-rb42g when I turn on it says boot manger is compressed it says hit crl alt del to continu but goes back to same screen. Kids messed with it don't know wat happend

You will need a windows recovery disc, you can make one on any Windows Vista/7 computer

Windows Button > Control Panel > Backup and Restore > Create a system repair disc.

Boot to the recovery disc and type the following commands
compact /U C:\bootmgr
compact /U C:\ntldr

That should uncompress them.

Hi. I my fn keys no longer work in the sony vaio FS285B

The problem is that the Fn Hotkey Utility breaks when XP SP2 or some other patch goes on. You can fix this by using the Vaio Recovery Wizard. Click on it, then Proceed With System Recovery, Custom Recovery, Application Recovery. Select HotKey Utility then Repair. It takes a reboot and works after that.

This is a skill you will get good at with a Vaio as it seems that every driver update or patch from Microsoft will break something.

I hope this helps!

After system recovery of my sony Vaio PCV-RS510, I did a Vaio updates and now computer will not boot. None of the buttons or keys working. Displaying "Sony" only.

If you have an install disc boot to it, restart your PC hold down F12 and select the CD/DVD Drive. If it boots to disc, go to the command prompt then run SFC /scannow. This will run the system file checker and repair your files as well.

How to do full system recovery for my sony vaio PCG-4JBP? thk u

Not sure what you mean when you say "full system recovery" but the operating system will have system restore points that you can access from the control panels system protection option. If you want to perform a factory default reset, start up the laptop and then look out for options that can be accessed by pressing one of the number function (Fn) keys. I believe the Vaio range comes with an option to restore the laptop back to it's shipped factory defaults, the interface is reliable and did a great job when I restored a Vaio VGN-NW20EF, came out like new!

VGN TX650P FN keys and AV buttons are not working after reinstalling windows and drivers.

i,

It depends how you reinstalled the OS in the computer, was it using the recovery discs or retail XP disc. Using recovery discs if you are installing, everything should work fine. This scenario may occur if you have used a retail OS disc to reinstall the OS.

Anyways try the below mentioned troubleshooting steps:

Install the Original Video Driver from the below link:

http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-download.pl?mdl=VGNTX650PB&upd_id=2149&os_id=7

After this install Origial VAIO Event Sevices:

http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-download.pl?mdl=VGNTX690P&upd_id=1975&os_id=7

Then, install VAIO Event Service Update.

http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-download.pl?mdl=VGNTX650PB&upd_id=2287&os_id=7

At last, install the AV Mode Utility app:

http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-download.pl?mdl=VGNTX650PB&upd_id=2040&os_id=7

Install the drivers in the same order, this should work. VAIO Event Services take cares about the FN keys, after installing all these drivers, restart the computer and check if the VAIO Event Service is running at the startup.

Thanks!!!!

I had lost my third recovery disc in vaio vgn-cs280j what i have to do?

You can create the Recovery Discs for the Computer.

  1. Ensure all open programs are closed.
  2. Ensure all network connections are disconnected.
  3. Ensure all peripheral devices are disconnected. NOTE: If the computer uses an external CD/DVD drive, ensure the drive is plugged in according to the instructions in the VAIO User Guide.
  4. From within the VAIO Recovery Center application, under Choose a program , click Create Recovery Discs . NOTE: The VAIO Recovery Center can be accessed from within Windows Help and Support . Click Troubleshoot my VAIO [FIG. 1], and then click Launch VAIO Recovery Center .
  5. In the Create Recovery Discs window, click the Start button.
  6. In the When recovery discs are needed window, click the Next button.
  7. In the Choose your media window, click the Next button. NOTE: Although an option is provided for creating Dual Layer (DL) discs, that option will not produce usable discs on this model. Ensure the Create recovery disc(s) using... DVD(s) option remains selected before clicking Next .
  8. Insert a blank, recordable DVD into the DVD drive.
  9. In the Insert a blank disc window, click the OK button.
  10. Insert a new disc when necessary as instructed.
  11. When all the disks have been created, click the Finish button.

You can call Direct Accessories and Parts Center at: 1-800-488-SONY (7669) to order Recovery Discs also.
