Once you plug the VGA cable from the computer to the VGA port on the tv, get the remote for the TV and go to the Select Input function so that you can select PC or Computer as the input source. Then Reboot the Computer.
Once the computer reboots it will probably display on the tv. If not, Press and Hold the FN function key on the computer then hit the correct key (F1 thru F12) that toggles the display. The correct key (F1 thru F12) will have LCD/CRT on it or it might have the icon of a display.
Once it is pressed the video should toggle each time you hit it from showing on the Computer only, TV only, both the TV and Computer.

Some TV's don't have a VGA input. S-Video cable is more common. Look on the back of your computer an see if you have an S-Video jack. If you have a TV compatible output on your computer, such as an S-video jack, just take an S-video cable and connect it to your computer and your TV. If you do not, then attach your VGA end of your adapter to your computer and use the RCA, S-video or Component Video cable to attach to your TV. After you've made all the connections, make sure you are on the correct TV video input. Press the input button on your TV or remote until you see your computer's signal.

Try a different display setting, for example, 1280 x 800 or 1024 x 768. Once you can see (computer) display, then move onto the best resolution which your display card support for your HDTV. Good luck..
(btw, if your dell has two vga sockets, get another vga cable. Then set your computer to a dual display mode, one for your computer and the other for HDTV. this way you will never lose your display.)

Try opening the computers case and resetting the BIOS Battery
Now BEFORE you open the computer do the following:-
(1 Unplug the computer from ALL conections
(2 Touch the metal case on the computer to get rid of any static electricity. Static + Computer = Dead Computer so be sure not 2 have static electricity when operating on computer.
Now we may begin!
Now once you open your computer find some thing called the BIOS Battery. Now it's a CR2032 Battery which is the type people use in tamagotchis and pocket LED lights. It will be silver and round and about the size of a camera lens. Now find a clip or something holding it in place. Push that clip and the battery will pop out. AVoid touching the motherboard witch is the big board that the BIOS Battery is on. It wont damage anything by touching it by just try not to.
Now wait about an hour.
Once youve waited around an hour put the BIOS Battery back in.
Switch on your computer and hey presto we have bootup.
Now your computer will say something like press F2 to setup BIOS or Press Escape to run deafult settings.
Just stick with the deafult settings.

Try to install the updated sound/audio driver. If nothing happens, it means that you have a bad headset jack.
