Water level switch doesn't shut off the water

The tub overflows and the water continues to run. I want to check the hose and senser between the switch and the bottom of the tub but can't figure out how to get the top or front of the washer apart. I don't want to break any clips. it's a maytag PAV2300

    I found a small opening in the back of the washer where I could see the hose and where it attaches to the tub. The hose was off and was able to reach in with long needle nose pliers and reattach the hose without having to remove the front and back of the washer.

Washer Basics: Filling with water:
The water fill valve - The water fill valve is a mechanical and electrical part, the coils on the valve need electricity to mechanically open the valve to allow the water to flow into the washer....myth....the washer pumps water into itself...no, it does not. The fill valve opens and the house water pressure pushes the water into the washing machine.
No cold water or no hot water - The fill valve has two coils, one for the hot water and one for the cold water. It is possible that one of the coils can fail and you loose that filling ability. If the cold water coil quits, the hot will still work and during warm fill you will get hot water only and during a cold fill you will get no water at all. If the hot coils quits, you will still have cold water fill, cold water only on a warm setting and no water on a hot fill setting. You can No cold water or no hot water - The fill valve has two coils, one for the hot water and one for the cold water. It is possible that one of the coils can fail and you loose that filling ability. If the cold water coil quits, the hot will still work and during warm fill you will get hot water only and during a cold fill you will get no water at all. If the hot coils quits, you will still have cold water fill, cold water only on a warm setting and no water on a hot fill setting. You can test a fill valve live for 120 volts, power to a fill valve coil and no fill = a bad fill valve. You can also test the coils for continuity, no continuity = a bad fill valve. Some Maytag washers have a fuse in the fill valve circuit, if this fuse let go the washer will not fill. Fill valves can also from time to time stick open and not stop filling. If you have to shut off the fill valves to stop the water from filling in the washer, you have a bad fill valve and you will have to replace it.


Water level controls - The water level control is also know as a pressure switch, this is where you set the water level ( small - medium - large ). The water level control is responsible to shut off the power to the fill valve and direct that power to the timer so the washing machine can start up. The WLC has electrical contacts in it that sends power to the fill valve and when the WLC is satisfied the water level is correct the electrical contacts open power to the fill valve and send the power to the timer and the washer starts. Picture of this here. How the water level control knows when it is time to shut the water off is, a air tight hose runs from the outer washer tank to the water level control. As the water fills the outer tank air is pushed up the hose, depending on which setting you have made ( small- medium - large ) is takes a certain amount of this pressure to make the WLC cycle over and shut off the water and send this power to the timer. If this hose develops a leak or a pin hole the washer can over fill as the WLC may not be able to shut the water off. The water level control can also break down and allow the washer to over fill as well.

A couple of tips from readers (Thankx!! ):
~ If you have a loose hose on the water level control or tank end, use a plastic wire tie to help hold the hose tighter and make a tight fit.
~ The water level tube (tube that runs from the square box), access panel on the outer drum where the bleach tube also ends) from the pressure sensor switch (front panel) can become clogged.  Or the two holes from the outer tub into this square box panel on the outside of the outer tub can become clogged. Either clog, I am told by my help repair guy can cause the sensor to think that there is still too much water in the tub and so will not allow motor to activate spin.
~ If the water level control contact is bad, it may also stop the filling ok, but not tell the washer to start agitating.

Maytag performa will fill with water and will not stop. Even when you stop it at half way water still comes out at the bottom in floor.

Just make the zip tie snug enough to keep the air hose from sliding off. If the hose has any cracks or holes, you can attempt to seal them by using electrical tape. Replacement tubing can be purchased at any hardware store.

NOTE: This is not an all inclusive fix, as the Pressure Switch can fail in some cases and cause similar symptoms. This is merely a preliminary check for a common occurrence that I have discovered. It can give symptoms of a major problem, resulting in a call for a repairman, only to turn out to be a simple fix that any Do-It-Yourselfer should be able to check and correct themselves. Water level does not recognize level....does not stop filling

I had the same problem, its the water-fill hose sensor located at the back of the tub. Sometimes it pops off if the tub goes out of balance, (poor design, no clamp on it) so if you can get in there see if the hose is properly fitted over the connector to the tub, happened twice to me, an easy fix, go by a clamp to keep it on.

Washer overflowing and running out bottom..all over my floor. It is not flooding out of drain.overflowing the tub..like it doesn't know what level of water it is at. Any suggestions?

yes; the water control switch is under the control panel it has a clear hose attached to it. the hose goes to a nipple on the tub. the weight of the water pressing down on the air in this hose turns off the water level switch. the hose has probably come loose from the tub or, the switch. also the switch could be bad. you can check the switch by blowing into the tub end and, listening for a soft click or. use a multimeter.

Washer over fills and water comes out the door. Water continues to run even durring the pump out cycle just before the spin cycle

  1. Water inlet valve. It may not be able to shut completely when the electricity to it has been turned off. The valve may leak and drip water into the clothes tub. Water may accumulate substantially and overflow. Remove the washer's cabinet to access it.
  2. Water level switch. This switch senses the water level in the clothes tub. It is usually a diaphragm device with a small clear tube attached between the switch and the bottom of the washer's outer tub. As the water level in the tub increases, the air pressure in the tube increases and activates the switch when the water reaches a certain level. When the switch is obstructed, it cannot tell the water to shut off and the machine overflows.Clear it from any obstruction.
  3. Air-hose. It is connected to the water level switch through a tube. If the tube or hose is cracked or broken, no enough pressure builds up to trigger the switch and shut the water supply off. Check it for any obvious damage.

My Kenmore All in one does not shut off the water after filling starts. It has even run water into the tub and over filled when not in use. Could it be the mixing valve?

I would suspect a faulty water level switch. This is a diaphragm type device with a small plastic tube attached between the switch and the bottom of the washer's outer tub. As the water level increases, so does the pressure on the air in the plastic tube and when it reaches a certain level it activates the switch to shut off the water. Make sure there is no damage to or obstruction of the plastic tube. The switch can be tested using a multimeter or ohmmeter and checking continuity. A lack of continuity would indicate a bad switch. The washer overflows

Check the water level switch. This is a diaphragm like device with a small clear plastic tube attached between the switch and the bottom of the washer's outer tub. As the water level increases, so does the pressure on the air in the plastic tube. When it reaches a certain level, it activates the switch to shut off the water and signals the timer to start appopriate cycle. Make sure the plastic tube is not damaged or obstructed. The switch can be tested for continuity using a multimeter or ohmmeter. A lack of continuity indicates a faulty switch. Hope this helped and best wishes.

Washer tub overflows and wont stop

The water level in a washing machine is determined by the pressure switch. The switch is located behind the load selector, water level, load size (has various names depending on model and manufacturer) knob on the operator console. If the switch malfunctions, the water will not shut off and the washer will overflow.

Now...before assuming the switch is defective, a common problem that occurs is the small air hose on the pressure switch coming loose or leaking. This air hose attaches from the wash tub to the pressure switch. The pressure swtich senses the change in air pressure as the tub fills and shuts the water off at the selected level. To access your pressure switch, unplug the washer and open the operator console. Look for a clear plastic hose. If it is NOT attached, you may have found your problem. Reconnect and test operate.

If it IS attached, check the entire length of the hose all the way to the wash tub for any cracks of leaks. In addition, remove the electrical connection(s) and check for corrosion. Clean if necessary.

Maytag washer PAV2300 water over flow

tidalwave If the water continues to flow even when the washer timer and the power to the washer are off then you are right and the water inlet valve has to be replaced. If it does it only when the washer is on then it could be different problems. In that case the first thing you have to check is the water level switch. This is the device which controls the water level. Remove the power first.Open the control panel and you will see the switch on the left side. There is the clear plastic hose connected to the switch. Make sure the hose is not loose. This is one of the most common cause of overflow. If it got loose, drain out all water from the washer before you reconnect the hose. If this is not the issue then you have to check the continuity across the water level switch therminals. When there is no water you should measure the continuity across therminals 11 and 12 (gray and orange wires). Whet the tub has filled up with water you should measure the continuity across therminals 11 and 14 (gray and light blue wires). If the continuity is wrong replace the water level switch. If you are going to do it, make sure there is no water in the tub before you will remove the clear plastic hose from the old switch. Good luck. Gendos. post back...
