Answering machine no longer works

My answering machine function stopped working, and so did my speaker phone. This happened when the corded phone base (which is the main unit) had been accidentally unplugged from the A/C power source. I have since plugged it in again, as well as unplugged it from the jack, and plugged it back in....but the answering machine feature and speaker phone still won't work. It operates as a regular phone: can use the base or handset, and caller ID still works. After I plugged it in again, all I see on the console is a message that says INITIALIZING.... it never stops..... Have called the helpdesk at 1-800-448-0329 and they told me to double check that I don't have voicemail enabled by my local phone company. Well I checked and I don't have it. Any ideas on what to do?

There is one more glitch to this problem. Normally when I plug in the phone again, (both A/C and phone line) it has "INITIALIZATION" (not "INITIALIZING", like I originally reported) on the console and the speaker phone feature does not work, nor does the answering machine and no setup appears to work. However, on rare occasions, several days after being in "INITIALIZATION" it comes out of it and speaker phone works but is very garbled (can't hear anything clear). I then try to do setup for answsering machine and it does not work, can't hear anything. So answering machine still does not work.

I recently spoke to the helpdesk again and they recommended I unplug the cordless handset as well, remove the batteries, as well as unplug the base, and then plug everything back again in reverse order. I end up with the same problem of being stuck in "INITIALIZATION" mode again. I am about to give up and just go out and buy a whole new unit, but wondering if anyone is out there and has any ideas before I do that.

After a power outage of 18+ hours...we have an identical problem. But I want to add that our caller id was also affected...one time it might ring umpteen times and still won't identify caller...but maybe the next time someone calls it will. Several times i also tried unplugging everything and plugging back in...including the handset...reinacting the initial hook up when we first purchased it...but to no avail.

Albert, We're still having the same problem with our answering machine not working and we're still stuck in the "intialization" mode. After days of checking and rechecking this site among others for a solution...of which none have been "remotely" feasible to solving our problem...we "hung it up" and just bought us another similiar phone system. Pardon the puns! :)

Pull the power from the back of the phone. Press the format button and hold it. Then reinsert the power plug aand let go of the format button.

Wow..SAME thing...this phone system has gotten to be about 10 years old and the gurus or factory service won't help you out too much because of the bell and whistles it has...and time is money eventually...keypad membranes go bad..bugs get in them...the crawlly ones...if they share the place..my "initialization" left me throwing away the headache and going to Walmart...FIX YA!!!!!

I need remote instructions for the phonemate 3900 am

The remote function will allow you to control your answering device from anywhere. On the Phonemate brand, you simply "key in" your answering machine's PIN number when your answering machine picks up your call. From there you can playback your messages, erase messages, record a different greeting and more. On some models the "default" PIN code is stamped on the bottom of the unit. Some units have a battery backup to retain messages if you have a power outage. If your PIN code IS printed there, and you have forgotten your PIN code, simply remove the battery from the bottom of the unit, wait a minute, and reinstall the battery. Your PIN code will be reset. I have attempted to get a manual for your unit and the best on the web so far has only come up with the address as follows
Phonemate Answering Machine Sales & Service Center 2321 Morena Blvd. San Diego, CA 92110 Phone:(619) 276-7312If this helps, let me know. We'll dig a little deeper.

External Answering Machine Hook up with M7310

Even though the plug that plugs into the wall on an M-7310 looks like the same plug that the answering machine has, it's function is completely different. The information passed on the single pair of wires is enough to make a 24 button 10 button or 8 button system phone work, has no ringing voltage or dial tone for a single line device like your answering machine.

A Nortel system has ports that have that information, but most likely the answering machine was installed BEFORE the phone system lines, which means it only answered the first line.

Try plugging your answering machine into the EXACT location it was before.

Answering system question

I believe the procedure is supposed to be this:

Dial the phone and wait for the outgoing message.

During the message, enter your three digit security code. If you haven't changed it, the factory default code is 123. That should put you in charge of the answering machine functions through the keypad of the phone you are calling in from.

You may need to write up a "cheat sheet" to remember what buttons do what answering machine functions. I think the controls should work the same as the labeled functions on the handsets that came with the 28112EE2 phone system. That is, 1 replays the message, 2 is the play/stop button, 3 skips ahead, etc.

No ring and no answering machine.

My phones work, but the answering machine does not play back. My friends say that the machine on their end leaves a message.
