My answering machine function stopped working, and so did my speaker phone. This happened when the corded phone base (which is the main unit) had been accidentally unplugged from the A/C power source. I have since plugged it in again, as well as unplugged it from the jack, and plugged it back in....but the answering machine feature and speaker phone still won't work. It operates as a regular phone: can use the base or handset, and caller ID still works. After I plugged it in again, all I see on the console is a message that says INITIALIZING.... it never stops..... Have called the helpdesk at 1-800-448-0329 and they told me to double check that I don't have voicemail enabled by my local phone company. Well I checked and I don't have it. Any ideas on what to do?
Pull the power from the back of the phone. Press the format button and hold it. Then reinsert the power plug aand let go of the format button.
Wow..SAME thing...this phone system has gotten to be about 10 years old and the gurus or factory service won't help you out too much because of the bell and whistles it has...and time is money eventually...keypad membranes go bad..bugs get in them...the crawlly ones...if they share the place..my "initialization" left me throwing away the headache and going to Walmart...FIX YA!!!!!

There is one more glitch to this problem. Normally when I plug in the phone again, (both A/C and phone line) it has "INITIALIZATION" (not "INITIALIZING", like I originally reported) on the console and the speaker phone feature does not work, nor does the answering machine and no setup appears to work. However, on rare occasions, several days after being in "INITIALIZATION" it comes out of it and speaker phone works but is very garbled (can't hear anything clear). I then try to do setup for answsering machine and it does not work, can't hear anything. So answering machine still does not work.
I recently spoke to the helpdesk again and they recommended I unplug the cordless handset as well, remove the batteries, as well as unplug the base, and then plug everything back again in reverse order. I end up with the same problem of being stuck in "INITIALIZATION" mode again. I am about to give up and just go out and buy a whole new unit, but wondering if anyone is out there and has any ideas before I do that.
panasonic kxtg2356 answering machine will not take messages. it says i have tech problems to try again later.
After a power outage of 18+ hours...we have an identical problem. But I want to add that our caller id was also affected...one time it might ring umpteen times and still won't identify caller...but maybe the next time someone calls it will. Several times i also tried unplugging everything and plugging back in...including the handset...reinacting the initial hook up when we first purchased it...but to no avail.
Albert, We're still having the same problem with our answering machine not working and we're still stuck in the "intialization" mode. After days of checking and rechecking this site among others for a solution...of which none have been "remotely" feasible to solving our problem...we "hung it up" and just bought us another similiar phone system. Pardon the puns! :)
