We turned it on one day, the lens opened and extended and then it shut down. It does not come on - it tries and then shuts down. My computer doesn't even acknowledge that it is connected. Tried new batteries; tried leaving without batteries for a while then inserted batteries, tried again - same results. Any ideas or help?

Did you drop your camera? If yes you either damaged the lense mechanical parts. If some dust or small particle are on the side of the lense, it may prevent the lense from opening up. If the lense opens up and down a little bite try to pull it out by have very softely. If it opened fully, clean up the outside of the lense and turn your camera a few times. If it does not have a mechanical problem, it should be back to normal. If above did not help, the lense has to be taken out and inspect for broken or damaged parts and clean it and put it back on the camera.
Good Luck!!!!

See if the menu has a battery type setting. Some cameras have the ability to use different battery types (alkaline, Ni-Cad, Lithium, ect) and have power management presets to accurately indicate a low battery condition. If you are set to one type an install another, a false reading would result.
