Fixed Disk Parameter Table or BIOS Error Okay, so I was browsing around the web the other day. My notebook completely locked up, and I had to hold in the power button for 10 seconds to do a hard shut down....

Remove the hard drive and see if you get the same symptom. It should boot, then go into the BIOS and see if it recognizes the RAMs. Re-seat the RAMs if it doesn't boot - if you have two circuit boards - try one at a time. The motherboard can also be your problem.

I have a compaq presario x1000 that wont let me get past the logo. It was working fine one day, but then I shut it down. The next morning I booted it up it the computer never went past the Compaq logo.

It is likely that the hard drive is bad or a memory issue. I would start by removing the hard drive and see if it goes past the compaq screen. If it does then you know what is wrong. If not message me and will walk you through the next step

I am trying to install a new WD Scorpio Blue hard drive on my Compaq presario x1000. The computer is not recognizing the drive (it says none installed). When I insert the installation CD it gives me a disk...

I would first make sure that your laptop can actually handle the HDD's capacity, and the interface, then go into yout BIOS and make sure any switches that need to be hit are in fact set properly. First make sure that it is actually powering up. Regardless of what's going on, if the jumper settings are correct your motherboard should notify you that there is a proper conection in the bois display. If you don't see this, make sure that it is actually powering up, and that the jumper pin(s) are positioned correctly.

Compaq Presario V2000 boot problem

Bios is not on an hard drive, is on a memory chipinside computer. Your main problem is not with Bios, but with system.
On many Compaq you can start the recovery tool by pressing f10 or f11 on startup. The system recovery tool it is located on hard disk, if it does not start it had been deleted or is damaged.

In your case Windows is corrupted, that is the reason why it is freezing , and then giving the blue error screen.

You need to get a Windows setup disk and reintall Windows. If you install windows from a generic setup disk you will need to install drivers after installing.
Drivers can be downloaded from HP website.

Another solution is calling the phone number listed on the user manual to contact HP. you can buy from them an original recovery CD, in this case you won't need drivers.

Otherwise you can ask a quote to a local repair shop for a system reinstall, I think it is about $80.

Trying to reformat my PC but can't get into BIOS set up.

Hey,

Seems the screen is slow to start up, right after pressing the power button, keep tapping on f1 or f10 untill the bios screen or something else comes up. that will definitely get you into the bios and dont mind if the computer starts to beep, slow down a little and keep tapping.

Thanks,
Ekse

Upgrarade bios

get your DOS version number and manufacturer details. from product catalog or enter the dos when starting up by using f10 or del. Download the BIOS update from manufacturers site. Follow the instructions strictly. Also check if you have sufficient power back up in case of power failure during upgrading.
