I have a GE microwave. When I partially open the door (not fully open, just a crack at the top), the microwave will start buzzing. The buzzing stops if I close the door or open it completely. I did not open the door while the microwave is running. Does partially opening the door cause the magnetron to turn on and leak microwaves? (P.S. I think I only disengaged the top switch on the door when I opened up a crack.)
If the top is open, the upper door switch should be open and the high voltage section should not be energized. That's the way it's *supposed* to work. But that buzzing is worrysome! Does the turntable turn during this condition? Does the inside light come on? How about the fan? If not, then I would doubt that it's cooking. If so, some models will do this. It's not uncommon to notice that the fan and light will try to come on for a split second when you shut the door. This would not indicate a problem. It has to do with the timing of the door switches and a replay on the board. If it's still under full warranty, it wouldn't hurt to call a GE-authorized servicer.
I guess I should really clarify my response...
If that buzz sounds like the magnetron, that's a problem.
If it's the turntable or fan motor, it's okay.
During normal cooking, you hear the magnetron's distinctive buzzing pretty clearly for the first second or so after hitting the START pad. After that, the cooling fan has gotten to full speed and it drowns out a lot of the mag's sound.
Run the oven a few times so you can get an "ear" for the magnetron buzz. Then try your door trick to see if the buzz seems to be the same. If so, then you may be cooking while the door's "cracked".

We have a Whirlpool Gold micro/oven combo. We can open the door to the micro and the micro continues to run. We had someone out to look at it and they said it was just the fan. We were ok with that, but realized that we can open and shut the door and it never turns off and continues to cook. So, if it is just the fan on the initial opening of the door, can the actual cooking be turned back on when you shut the door? Because that is what is happening.
GE microwave plugged in first time it was running. Only way it stops is to open the door. Pressing cancel has no affect and will not accept new selection. It's like a previous selection has stuck and will not dislodge
the buzzing sound is on the right side of the microwave
Turns on when door is opened
is there anything i can check
Microwave hums when not running with door closed
I have a less than 3 year old over the range Samsung microwave and after using it today I shut the door and it made a buzzing sound while it was off. After opening the door it stopped. I closed the door again and it buzzed more. When I opened the door the glass turn plate was warm. Called a repair person but it stopped buzzing and while he was there it worked fine. Trying to figure out what it was? It could have been buzzing from the right upper side but not sure.
