My Tv is turning off by itself

I dont know whats wrong with my TV, its fairly new, I have had it less than a year. It just started turning off by itself today. Now it wont stay on for longer than a few seconds and it turns off, it seems like the VCR is trying to eject a tape maybe, but there isnt a tape in it, and we havent watched a VHS tape in a very long time, as we are rarely home. Please help, is there a way that I could possibly disable my VCR from the combo, so that I dont have to worry with it?

same problem....how do you fix it?????

  • jrk45 Mar 13, 2008

Same problem as the rest my tv turns off after about 5 seconds. I have tried a number of things such as turning it on then umpluggin before it shuts itself off. when I plugged it up again it stayed on for about ten seconds but went back in to the 5 second mode again. I tried putting a cd and a cassette in, changing channels, resetting the timer but it goes off before I can do anything with the menu. I took it to a repairman and he said it would not be worth the cost as I could buy another one for a little more on what it would cost to repair because of labor costs. It seems a shame as it works fine but won't stay on.RandyK

If all you want to do is disable the vcr portion turn the set on , install a blank vhs tape it has to be blank or the vcr will try to read it .and the tv and dvd should work fine. this is a timing problem in the vcr deck its not hard to fix but it is a pain.

My Emerson Combo did the same thing it would shut off after a few seconds. But if you have a a VHS tape handy put it in turn on the power and it should pull the tape in. Once the tape is in it will eject the tape leave it in. My TV has been working every since then and I can watch DVD's and tapes. Good Luck!

What do I do when my Emerson TV keeps turning off by itself?

This is probably due to dry solders in the power supply area of the tv... next time when it powers off give it a whack on the side and see if will just light up for a moment.. If it doesn't just open the tv and check for dry solders, loose contacts and faulty capacitors.. PS:I would not task some one without experience in electronics to handle this one. This shouldn't cost you much even if you hire a tech anyway..

Insignia lcd 37''powering off and right back on by itself!

Hi Ed,
Since the TV is less then a year old and still under manufacturers warranty, I would suggest to take back to the vendor to get it fix because this LCD behavior is not going to get any better.
The failure on this TV is related to a power supply in most cases if the TV is turning OFF by itself or needs to be unplug to let cooldown and it works afterward.

TV turns itself off after turning on. TV screen goes black.

Based on what I have read AKAI has reoccurring problems with power supply and bad DVD sound. The problem you have is caused by the DVD player trying to start. Never leave a disk in when you shut it off or you will have the same symptom you are describing.

What do I do when my Emerson TV keeps turning off by itself?

I had the same problem with mine turning off after 3-5 seconds. After much research I found a suggestion that on some combo units the vcr part could have a power supply cutout if it is not working correctly. I tried to insert a tape and found that the tape mechanism would not accept a tape. I used a little bit of force and managed to insert a tape. I then played the tape forwards and backwards and the power stayed on! I ejected the tape and found the TV then worked just fine. The power has now been on for over one hour. I hope this give you another avenue to try and fix your problem.
