A black box appears on the screen

A black box covering almost the entire area of the screen appears at sometimes regular; sometimes irregular intervals. some evenings it never appears; other evenings it will apppear occassionally; still other times it will appear at exactly 20 seconds intervals. I can remove the box by tapping any button on the remote. twenty seconds later it returns. audio is fine. this occurs only on channel 36. No other set I own does this. Why the local channel 36 station would transmit a black box on its signal and only be picked up by this set is a mystery.

The close caption feature most be on and you need to disable it to get rid of the black box,the close caption must be set in any mode for the box to come up,maybe text1 or text2.Go thru the menu options until you get to the CC feature, some remotes have a key to bring it up and disable it.Let us know if you need more information.

Black boxes on a few TV channels - connected to DIRECTV

Turn off closed-captioning. You'll find it's set for "text" right now, probably from hitting a button on the remote without realizing it. The set is blanking the screen for the text which doesn't show up. (In your case sometimes it does. You're the first person who's ever seen anything that I've responded to!) On channels and programs where captioning isn't being sent the box doesn't show up, so you don't know you have the trouble.

Black box in middle of screen

It's a text box for either closed captioning or demonstration mode. Go into the setup menu and turn off closed captioning. If you have trouble doing that, then just restore factory settings.

Blackout area on screen

Make sure the TEXT and CAPTION options are turned off.

I am not sure about the Sonny's, but on my Toshiba a black box appears when I inadvertently leave one of the close captioning (CC) on for text or captions on (such as CC1, CC2, etc.).

Black box in middle of screen

Note that the large black box goes away when pushing buttons on the tv (ex: the black box will disappear to show the volume setting when changing the volume on the tv but it will cover the picture and the menu display of the dtv box).

This is caused by the closed caption setting of the television set NOT the captioning of the converter box. To fix this you must open your television's menu, find the ccd/closed caption option, and turn it off. This is a frustrating problem as when most people are told to shut off the captioning they try to do so at the box.

Normal dtv box captioning will appear as a small text box at the bottom of the screen as you would expect - not as a giant black rectangle that covers most of the screen. If you do want to shut this off too you will find that you can't do it through the usual menu options (the menu will only allow changes to font, color etc.) - there should be a ccd button on the remote that when pushed will scroll through ccd-1, ccd-2,... off.

Black Box on the screen

It sounds like a text box that isn't receiving any text. If it covers almost the entire screen, then you might have accidentally got the settings into DEMO mode. It could also be a box for closed captioning, but that usually covers just the lower part of the screen. Either way, the solution is to go into the setup menu and restore facotry presets.

Black box showing up while viewing DVDs

This sound like a problem with the Closed Caption, on many sets if the C.C. is set to text a black box apears, and since it only happens on DVD you might look at the DVD menu and see if it has this Text featcher in the Closed Caption menu and turn it off

A black box appears on the screen

Hi,
Just happened to see your black box problem associated with your T.V.; Thought I would pass along an idea for you to check into, and let me know if it helped...Check into whether or not it has a onscreen text block mode, if it gets into this mode by accidentally pressing the wrong buttons on the remote and or TV, it could and I have seen, at least with zeniths, a big black box which will cover the whole screen except for a 2 to 4 inch border around the box and outer edge of the screen...if this is the case, find someone familiar with the correct setting for the set associated with this problem, and get it back into the right mode....Hope this helps..T.

Black box showing up while viewing DVDs

Go to your TV remote, in the menu find the closed caption or sometimes it is on the remote itself. Turn off the closed caption. this should solve your problem. Good Luck
