Whirlpool Dryer model LER4624BW2 doesn't get hot enough

The element gets hot and red but it seems to either not get hot enough or not stay on for long enough. This dryer is about 17 years old. I have checked continuity across thermal fuse, cycling thermostat, thermal cutout and high limit thermostat. Could the cutout or high limit be malfunctioning even if they are not blown? How do I check this? Should I just replace them? Could the element be malfunctioning even though it gets hot? Could part of it be bad? Should I replace it? Sorry, I'm not well-versed in electrical stuff, but I can certainly follow clear instructions. Thanks!

By the way: I have thoroughly cleaned the lint out and ran the dryer without hose attached. Same results. So please don't bother to suggest cleaning the lint! LOL!

Uh, I don't know what more details I can add. Does no one have any suggestions for me? I'm thinking I should just replace the element. Anyone disagree with that?

  • Anonymous Apr 03, 2012

    Wow. No responses?
Do dryers just get old and wear out even if all the parts seem to working? I really can't afford a new dryer right now. I could afford a $50 element if that's the problem but I'm not convinced it is. I opened it back up today and checked everything again. All have continuity, even the element. Vacuumed it out real good and ran it without the hose again. Still damp after 1.5 hours on high heat. Whassup with that?

Nevermind. I found my answer on another forum.

Here's what it was: The solutions I found here all mainly talked about cleaning out the lint trap and hose. I did all that - ran it without the hose and still had the problem. I searched around and found out that not only should I be looking at the filter and hose as sources of lint buildup - I should also be looking at the blower housing. This is a 17 year old dryer. As far as I know the blower housing has never been removed and cleaned. I removed the blower housing - I found the instructions and pictures on another site. I pulled out handfuls of packed lint and even a large-ish Lego block. Reassembled and viola! Runs great. Towels are dry in 45 minutes now.

The fact that solutions were 90% running to the airflow being constricted made me search further. I thought the airflow was OK, but I guess I had never felt really good airflow out the vent before so I didn't have anything to compare it to. Now it REALLY blows! And in a good way.

What was your solution? I was thinking one or more of the multiple coils in the element could be burned out but not the entire thing I've see that happen before. Glad you got it fixed!

Blown high limit fusees can be caused by.

  1. Not enough airflow caused by blockage in the exhaust vent pipe.(most common) Check for strong airflow coming out of the back of machine, then check for good airflow at exterior vent. Clean vent if airflow is restricted.
  2. Bad drum seal
  3. Dirty lint screen
  4. Broken blower wheel
  5. Blockage inside the machine.

Dryer hot at first and then stay cold

Sounds like the thermocouple needs replaced. When ever the couple doesn't make enough electricity the gas valve is shut down automatically. Sounds like your thermocouple is right at the threshold of minimum voltage and doesn't generate enough voltage to keep valve open.

If not that try YouTube for some good diagnostic videos:

Whirlpool Dryer IED4400SQ0 wont get hot

Did you pull the element out and test it? I think it is your heating element. Visually inspecting is never enough. Just hook it up to high voltage independently to ensure it heats. It will turn red hot.

My whirlpool dryer comes on and runs good but it wont get hot can you tell me whats the problem

Hello there and welcome to fixya there are several things that could make this dryer not heat up
Here are the most common things

Thermal Fuse

If the dryer doesn\'t heat, but the drum
turns, check the thermal fuse(s). The thermal fuse protects the dryer
from overheating and helps to prevent fires. If the thermal fuse is
blown, it will have to be replaced.

Enter your model number to see parts for your dryer.

Help me find my model number

Gas Valve Solenoid

The gas valve has two or more electric
solenoids which open the valve to let the gas flow into the burner
assembly. If the dryer doesn\'t heat one or more of the solenoids may be
defective. If the igniter glows for 90 seconds but the burner flame
doesn\'t light, replace these coils as a set.

Dryer Igniter

If the dryer doesn\'t heat, the igniter might
be burned out. Check the igniter for continuity with an ohm meter. Dryer
igniters burn out over time, similar to a light bulb.

Heating Element

The heating element on an electric dryer can
burn out over time. If the dryer doesn\'t heat, the element should be
checked for continuity. The heating element cannot be repaired and must
be replaced if defective.

Heating Element Assembly

the heating element assembly on an electric
dryer can burn out over time. If the dryer doesn\'t heat, the element
assembly should be checked for continuity. The heating element assembly
cannot be repaired and must be replaced if defective.

Flame Sensor

Gas dryers have a flame sensor to detect the
heat given off by the flame. If the dryer doesn\'t heat, the flame sensor
might be defective. Check the flame sensor for continuity. This is not
as common as a burned out igniter or thermal fuse.

High Limit Thermostat

Although not common, if the dryer doesn\'t
heat the high limit thermostat can be defective. It can be checked for
continuity. If the thermostat is "open" the dryer doesn\'t heat.

Cycling Thermostat

The cycling thermostat regulates the
temperature of the air in the dryer. If the dryer doesn\'t heat it may be
caused by a defective cycling thermostat. This is not common.

Main Control Board

The main control board is normally not at
fault when the dryer doesn\'t heat. Check all of the other components in
this troubleshooting guide before replacing the main control board. The
main control board cannot be tested easily and must be replaced if it is
defective.

Timer
The timer is normally not at fault if the
dryer doesn\'t heat. In many situations where timers are replaced they
end up being returned. Check all of the more common components in this
troubleshooting guide before replacing the timer

Whirlpool gas dryer (LGR8648PW1) doesn't stop spinning in automatic mode.

More than likely a bad timer assembly. They are usually easy enough to replace if you have basic mechanical skills. The part can be ordered from repairclinic.com.

I have a whirlpool le6150xsw1 dryer and its not getting hot

For this job, all your work is going to be behind the machine. Tools you'll need is: 1/4 nut driver or drill with 1/4 adapter and a multimeter with ability to check continuity. With the machine unplugged, remove the back cover of the dryer. Once done, the heating element will be located on the right hand side with two fuses on the housing of the element. Test the element and each fuse seperatly by removing the wires and checking for continuity on each component. All parts should show continuity, so if one doesn't its bad and needs to be replaced
