first of all make sure your phone is compatible with South Africa, the states us frequency 1900/900 so check to make sure its a world phone.

if ur phone is and if you have unlocked the provider code then you should be fine.

I suspect that this phone is not a world phone which works thus the problem you have.

you should also try different sim cards as well b/c some older sim cards will not work with this phone
