Working on my Toshiba laptop with windows vista.. i burned a avi onto a dvd-r disk, and the toshiba DVD player suddenly wont play back my movie. Says to ' set the color quality settings to highest quality (32bit) in the display settings' .. I dont know how to do that on vista :( help?
Shouldn't matter what the OS (operating system) is. What you need to do is to make sure you convert the movie to proper format which would allow you to view on DVD player after burning. Usually you need a seperate software. Your DVD player should say what formats are compatible. Usually listed on unit or in manual. Avi is a great format but when you burned it to DVD your computer probably created a Data Disk. Which would make it unreadable by DVD player. Check to make sure you are able to convert to format that's readable by your player.Good Luck

dvd players play vob or mp4 format. so try "convert x to dvd" software to burn your dvds in the right format http://www.vso-software.fr/products/convert_x_to_dvd/
try sothink dvd moviemaker software or dvdvideosoft software from www.cnet.com/download.....most dvd recorders will burn (check your manual for the correct type (+ / -) and brand that works best)...but wont let you play on other machines unless you format and the other machine is just as new as the recorder...(our older dvd players will not play these new dvd)
Some DVD players will read 'DVD-R' ("minus-R") disks.
Some DVD players will read 'DVD+R' ("minus+R") disks.
Some DVD players will read "both" types of disks.
So, if you're burning onto a DVD+R disk, you won't be able to "play" the disk on your Toshiba DVD-player.
Instead, buy "blank" DVD-R disks, and write on them.

1. Completely remove any dvd/cd player/burner softwares (i.e. Nero, Power DVD, etc.).
2. Go to device manager and remove your DVD/CD device from the device list
3. Restart you laptop
4. Windows will then try to reinstall the device drivers again for the DVD drive.
5. After another restart, then reinstall your dvd softwares again.
I had the same problem and spent some time looking up this issue. I have a sony dvd player and it seems to have trouble reading almost any burnt dvd or cd. I have read that sonys seem to prefer the cheap dvds and cds for burning. It seems the cheap'O dvd players play burnt dvds and cds better that the nice ones, go figure.
There is more info out there about making sure to burn dvds and cds in the correct format. You can try different burning software that has more options than just vista. If you are creating a dvd from a movie file such as an avi or mpeg, please explain more on what you are doing and trying to accomplish.
1.Have you finalized the discs? 2. have you checked the disk type the various players will accommodate not all machine will play all disks - this is particularly the case with CD/DVD - RW's The read appropriate manuals
