my laptop (compaq presario m2000) will not start up at all. HP's advice - removing all power sources, draining residual power from the notebook then attempting to start from only mains power - has no effect on the notebook. The power LED does not even light up.

FirewallAvat: Your problem is likely because your battery is dead and the adapter isn't charging it. This may be due to broken connections in the cable from the adapter. Flexing often causes the wire inside to break near the plug. Generic replacement adapters are available, or the wire can be cut back a bit and a suitable replacement soldered on. The cause might also be broken solder connections on the main board at the power jack, This is common from stress due to the power plug flexing. It is usually possible to open the computer and resolder these connections, although sometimes there's too much damage from arcing before the connection fails entirely.
DocBrown: Does the power LED on your computer come on when you connect the adapter? If not, try the adapter in another outlet anyway. Sometimes one outlet in a strip can go bad. Check the output of the adapter with a voltmeter. If it's bad, replace it or try repairing it as noted above. If the adapter is good but the light isn't on, you might have the bad power jack as well.

If it is a desktop unit and you are sure that there is a power supply from your outlet socket then usually it is the PSU (Power Supply Unit) that has gone down
That is your first port of call for checking, however, checking is done by substitution as most of the PSU units are beyond repairs to the ordinary layman -- if you open one up and you are not an electronics wizard, have a look for a tiny fuse on the silicon board, it has been known for this to blow ---- other than that, replace the complete unit making sure that you get the right plug socket for the motherboard connection
- Clean the CPU Fan with blower.
If while performing any step cpu goes to 100% then it seems problem can be due to hidden background running services, so i would suggest you to disable them with the help of Reginout, download it.
Here's what you can try.
1. Remove the battery and try turning the laptop just from AC adapter. Maybe the battery is bad and shorting the system.
2. Try turning it on just on battery power (with AC adapter removed). Maybe the AC adapter is bad and shorting the system.
3. Try removing memory modules one by one. Maybe your failure somehow
related to memory. Test the laptop with only one memory module
installed. Try either one.
If nothing helps, the laptop still turns on and off by itself, most likely this is motherboard related failure.
Remove your cpu/gpu heatsink, apply a ermal bonding, this will prevent shut off because of cpu/gpu overheating(chipset detects temperature faulty in the firsts seconds of operating your laptop), if this didnt resolve your problem, naybe and issue with your Mobo.
You probably put more than a pin-head size drop of heat grease compound on CPU, thus "bleeding" over on the CPU, effectively overheating processor (very common). In any event, your problem is overheating -that's *the* place to look for now.
Hi there. Reset the surge protector if you have one, or unplug it and leave it unplugged for a couple of hours, then try again. Post back with the results please
