Mirror up, shutter closed. New batteries, light meter works.

Bought an nice Canon AE-1 of eBay, "perfectly working order" but when it arrived the viewfinder was black. Took off lens: mirror up. Pulled it down with ease: not stuck, just wont re-****? I put new batteries in and held the mirror down to see if the light meter works hence the battery is working: it does. Able to push shutter down, I am also new to the AE-1. Cannot advance film.

SOURCE: light meter problem and blank developed film

I'm afraid you have a somewhat serious problem. There is a tungsten cable that runs from the speed dial to the rewind side if the camera. This cable sets the brushes for the electrical contacts the are under the rewind assembly. Adjusting speeds or ASA changes the position of the contacts.

It is very likely that the cable has broken and needs replaced. Canon no longer supports these nor do they have parts

SOURCE: Hi I have a canon ae-1 but the mirror stays

The mirror has most likely locked up due to the battery being dead. Replace the battery and the mirror should drop down and the shutter will work again.

SOURCE: Advance lever is stuck. I

Like all AE-1's and related models, your camera is gumming up inside as the internal lubricant films are at least 25 years old and are largely dried-out.

The fix is to get the camera to a repair specialist for a CLA service (Clean, Lubricate, Adjust). As a one-off extra cost also get the foam light seals and foam mirror buffer replaced as they'll either be absent by now or will still be turning to a sticky goo. Modern foam is is different material and is will not decay like the old stuff.

A CLA and foam replacement definitely costs more than the residual value of the camera, but they're solidly built and have plenty of cheap high quality lenses so can still achieve results which compare well to even the best modern pro dSLR's. Get the work done and your camera will probably last until 35mm film ceases to be available. Your camera will also withstand conditions which you'd never dare risk a dSLR in.

I had my Canon AE-1 serviced recently and it came back fine. I got through half a roll of film when it start not firing after I'd wound the film on and pressed the shutter release button. It was metering...

Just send it back to the servicing agent. It needs to be inspected to determine the fault anyway.

A reputable repairer would correct the fault free of charge if it proves to be an error with the recent service, but like all old cameras other parts can fail without warning.

Hi I have a canon ae-1 but the mirror stays latched up and the film will not advance and when I look through the shutter it is black.

The mirror has most likely locked up due to the battery being dead. Replace the battery and the mirror should drop down and the shutter will work again.

Underexposure problem maybe? please help!

Your camera probably needs a new battery.
The light meter needs sufficient power (5.5v to 6v) to work correctly.

Your ISO could have moved, even a double or halving of it will over/underxpose a full stop.

Shutter does not work..could it be the battery

Yes, it could. Try to shoot with 125x-mode to check if the shutter works on manual. If there are no lights coming up in the metering pillar it is very probable that hte batteries are gone.

Automatic aperture setting on canon FD lenses not working on AE-1

You have a case of AE(auto exposure) Unit faulty or getting bad. It suppose to register as it move within the AE unit according to the exposure calculation but somehow it is broken. Technician usualy replace the AE unit and takes care of the problem. It can also be rebuilt if new parts are not available. This requires complete disassembly and mirror box removal. The average cost of repair probably runs around $100. Yes, "A" mode is correct for most of the shots and it was a state of art electronic system and more computerized than you think. It has 3 IC chips in there for precessing and 1 chip for the exposure. All works together for good. -James

Shutter stuck on Canon AE 1

Just now saw your problem.....I can repair this for you. No it's not "overwound" you possible have some small piece of plastic that caused your second curtain to get hung up and thus jam the entire camera. I have probably repaired 500 AE-1's with the same problem. Art www.flcamerarepair.com

Canon ae-1

To open the back pull on the rewind knob ( pulling up ) until back opens. Check that your 6 volt battery is ok ( ae -1 has an electronic shutter so will not work without a battery ): battery situated on the left hand side of the camera ( if it is facing you ) underneath small flip up door ( lock is at the bottom on the left of the small door ) . Check the battery by pressing the shutter release gently and seeing if your light meter needle moves. No movement ? replace battery. You have two modes for taking pictures : auto which is actually AV ( aperture priority) or full manual : both are set by moving the shutter speed dial on the top right hand side ( underneath film winding lever ).
