If you have a router, check if the wireless light or the WLAN light on your router is on. Then, check if your wireless computers can detect other wireless network. You may also do a power cycle in the network.

Have a dell desktop xp home edition (no manual) - does this desktop have a wireless turn on/off button like a laptop does for wifi? thx

No, it doesn't. The Dell Dimension 4600 doesn't come with wireless. If you want to add wireless connectivity, you will need a Wi-Fi PCI card, like the following:

I need to lock my router from others using my wifi

    • 1 Disconnect the power cord from your high-speed modem. Locate the Ethernet port on the back of your modem. If an Ethernet cable is already plugged in, trace the cable to the second device and unplug the cable from it; otherwise, plug one end of an Ethernet cable to the open Ethernet port on your modem.
    • 2 Plug the unused end of the Ethernet cable to the port on the back of the router labeled "modem." Plug a second Ethernet cable into one of the open ports located above the "modem" port; connect this cable to the Ethernet port on your computer.
    • 3 Reconnect the power cord to your modem; wait for the lights on the front panel to turn green before proceeding. Plug one end of the router's power cord into the corresponding port on the back of the device; plug the remaining end into any available electrical outlet.
    • 4 Turn on your computer and log into your operating system as normal. Insert the installation CD into the computer; the installation application should load automatically (if it doesn't, you can find the application by manually browsing the CD's contents).
    • 5 Follow the onscreen instructions; after you have made the initial configurations, click on the option labeled "Security Assistant" on the left side of the installer window. Select the desired security type for your wireless network and click on the button labeled "Next."
    • 6 Choose a network key and enter it into the appropriate field; press "Next" and follow the onscreen instructions.
    • 7 Open your computer's wireless network settings and enter the wireless network name, security type and network key into the appropriate fields. Save your changes. Set-up is now complete.
Tips & Warnings
  • You can access additional settings via the modem's manual configuration interface. Open your web browser and navigate to 192.168.2.1; when prompted for a password, leave the field blank, and click on the button labeled "Submit."For optimal signal strength, choose a location for your router that will be near your computer, with as few walls and other obstacles as possible.

After moving to a new house/ new state, I can not get my HP 2035n to connect wirelessly to the router. It will print from any of our computers, but must stay connected to the router. I can find no...

The HP P2035N doesn't have a built-in wireless ethernet connection. It has a wired ethernet port. To connect to a wireless router, you need the HP Jetdirect ew2400 802.11g Wireless Print Server or the HP Wireless Printing Upgrade Kit or a similar device (note: not all third-party wireless print servers will work with the HP printer). Did you have something like this and misplace it during your move? If you did, try to find the print server to use the wireless option. Otherwise, continue wired ethernet option since it is working.

HP support for the printer (manuals, set up infomation, and drivers) is available here: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Home.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=3662025&lang=en&cc=us .

I hope this helps.

Telephone wall-plate <---- 4-strand telephone-cord ---> telephone-port in modem

AC power from wall-plate to modem.

LAN port #1 <--- Ethernet cable --> network-port on desktop/laptop computer #1.
LAN port #2 <--- Ethernet cable --> network-port on desktop/laptop computer #2.
LAN port #3 <--- Ethernet cable --> network-port on desktop/laptop computer #3.
LAN port #4 <--- Ethernet cable --> network-port on desktop/laptop computer #4.

Configure the router's wireless adapter:
* set a SSID
* set an encryption-level, e.g., 'WPA'
* set a network password

Use the SSID/password to configure your wireless devices (iPod Touch, iPad, XBOX 360, etc.)

Internet light on wireless modem is red and wont connect to internet. DSL, Wireless and Ethernet port 4 are all connected with green lights. Wont properly connect the modem.

If you connect the computer directly to the modem, does it work?
If that works then the modem is working.
Now connect the computer to the router and the modem to the router.
You will need to open the set up page of the router to check the settings of the router.
You can set up the router without the CD also.
It is very easy.

Netgear 624

to set upa network

http://lifehacker.com/software/wifi/geek-to-live-set-up-a-home-wireless-network-162754.php

there is no "earthnet" connection. it is an ethernet connection. it looks like a phone cable but has larger ends than a phone connector. the router is connected to the computer via an ethernet cable if it needs to be hardwired to a ethernet port or internal ethernet card. a wireless connection only needs to be an add-on internal card w/antenna or a usb connector hub (it looks like a usb flash memory stick)

here is how it's done. netgear has the same type setup.
