This sounds like it might be a defective CCD imager. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check the following two links for more info:

I do have a same problem and I sent it to Canon Repair centre UK - But they got back to me saying its not a faulty CCD but Shutter problem. I am a big fan of canon (so far) (used 4 still and 1 dSLR and was about to buy 40d...but now a big "?"). Even I thought I do have CCD problem too...now Canon is asking 150 GBP to reapair !!
