I think the model number can help you more for finding the year of manufacture. I couldn't find anything on the serial number. Also, if you contact a Yamaha outboard dealer, they can help you.
Yamaha Year Models
This Yamaha outboard year model chart will only work for Asia Pacific distributed engines. If you have a Yamaha engine that has been bought in from America or Europe direct the parts will still be the same but your model and year model code will be different. You will have to use your own knowledge of your engine to select the appropriate year. For Asia Pacific engines your year model code is found on the bottom right hand corner of your serial number decal. It will be a single letter as per the diagram below which can then be matched to the chart. Note: The letters will repeat in the below chart so use your judgement as to the correct year, ie: the engine in the picture is a 2003 model and not a 1982 model. 1973197419751976197719781979198019811982

It is not possible to retriev a year on yamaha with only the serial number.
On the serial number sticker, you'll find other data, like type, length, horsepower, weight etc...

Mariner 4hp are identical to Yamaha engines.
You should find a sticker on the port bracket with serial and model number.
If that sticker has disappeard, an aluminum piece is stamped in the side of the cilinder. The numbervstamped in that round pieceis the serial number. I can convert that serial number in a year/model number...
