If it's heating and shuts down, the thermal fuse may be defective, monitors the temperature of the magnetron, or the magnetron is overheating.

I think foil was in the microwave when cooking some thing. Does this give you any further insight?

  • Anonymous Mar 24, 2012

Yes! that would be enough to destroy the magnetron because tin foil acts like a conductor.

Remove vent grille, then remove control panel. Check wire to cavity thermostat. Sometime wire bundle and small space causes poor terminal connections on this thermostat and will burn wire terminal. Cut off bad part of the wire, install a small terminal end, reconnect to thermostat. If thermostat is destroyed, also replace thermostat.

Microwave dead even though power works

It sounds like the magnetron overheated and opened the thermal fuse on the magnetron.

This can be caused when the internal cooling fan is not running or by a magnetron that is failing.

When I say internal cooling fan, I do not mean the hood vent exhaust fan which you can turn on and off manually.

I'm instead talking about the internal fan which comes on automatically whenever you microwave.

It is vital that the cooling fan runs, or the magnetron will be destroyed.

There should be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting & testing.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

You can also find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

The magnetron will have a 5 to 9 year warranty. Your manual will tell you that.

You can download GE owner's manuals and installation instructions here.

If needed, GE may send you a replacement magnetron. GE Customer Service is here.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

Model #JES2251SJ02 trips immediately 20 amp circuit breaker. How many amps does this microwave need to work properly?

I called Public Service and they suggested either a dedicated line or upping tha amps of that c-breaker. I need to call an electrician to help me decide which is best for my house.
