Intermittent problem The camera works fine for awhile then the 4-way selector suddenly will not change the menu. Or it gets stuck on full flash or no flash. The selections may get mixed up. The review won't activate except for the last shot sometimes. Then if you leave the camera for a couple of days it seems to fix itself. Everything is fine then suddenly all the troubles come back. Although it gets messed up like this you can still take photos with it and you can use the other modes usually to over-ride the parameters; even when it is having its weak moments for which I am greatful. And still downlodas the sticks fine, but it is not a confidence builder when on a shoot or getting ready for a shoot. Does anyone have any idea of whats up with that and how to fix it or if it can be fixed or is it worth fixing? I love this camera and it has been good to me for thousands of well exposed photos but... is it time to put it too sleep or take it to the digi-docs. Thanks for your understanding and compassion. Nikon d3100 stuck on flash mode

What do you mean by flash mode?
Have you read the manual how to use the camera?
If nothing from there helps, try connecting it via USB and check if there is firmware update. If even that doesn't help, try acessing menu and doing hard reset from there.

I am using a Fujifilm FinePix JX250 digital camera. Not the best I know to photograph jewelry but cannot afford a different camera now. After I've taken the picture I open it in IPhoto. I make...

The following will help to get the best possible pictures from your Fujifilm FinePix JX250:

TO CHANGE FILE SIZE:
  1. Press MENU/OK to display the shooting menu.
  2. Press the Selector UP or DOWN to highlight the option IMAGE SIZE and press the selector RIGHT to change IMAGE SIZE to 14M. This setting has a image resolution of 4,288x3,216.
  3. Press MENU/OK to select the highlighted option.
  4. Press DISP/BACK to exit from the menu.
TO CHANGE QUALITY:
  1. Press MENU/OK to display the shooting menu.
  2. Press the Selector UP or DOWN to highlight the option IMAGE QUALITY and press the selector RIGHT to change IMAGE QUALITY to FINE (Less compression than NORMAL, meaning better picture quality).
  3. Press MENU/OK to select the highlighted option.
  4. Press DISP/BACK to exit from the menu.
NOTE: The focus range of the JX250 goes from 1.5 ft. - Infinity (Wide Angle), 2.6 ft. - Infinity (Telephoto), also make sure to clean the lens and adjust the focus before taking the photos. If the subject is close to the camera, select Macro mode. If the subject is far away from the camera, cancel Macro mode.

Suddenly green light sticks on, lens will not return. ..sometimes takes a pic then gets stuck...also nob at top different settings ie video will not show video all very intermittent

That is an indication that the camera operating on storage is full requiring new storage replacement or deleting media from the storage area to make continues capture.

580ex off camera shuts down after a minute or so of standby

No and no, the flash is by default programed to shut off after 1 minute .If you were using the flash on-camera, the flash would automatically power itself on when camera activity is detected but when the flash is detached, it doesn't wake back up.
To change this you have to turn off the auto shut off in the flash menu:
1. Power the flash on
2. Hold down the back light /C.Fn button until "Fn 00 0" appears on the screen
3. Rotate the selector wheel until you see "Fn 01 0"
4. Press your selector button down so that the 0 begins flashing
5. Rotate your selector wheel to change the 0 to a 1
6. Rotate the selector to the "Fn 14 0" position and set it to 1

7. Press your selector button to save this parameter
8. Press your Mode button to return to the main screen

Now your flash stays on as long as the flash switch is turned on ON, and as long as you have juice in the batteries.

Do not forget to turn off the flash after you are done. You can reverse it anytime, but you have to read the manual for that..

Same setup can be found in the manual

Not reading the memory card

You need to get rid of the pics in the internal memory. With no card in the camera, go into the menu and find "format"...follow the on-screen instructions. Now, your card should work properly.
