Yahoo email problem - problem opening attachments

Hello I have a problem with my Yahoo mail account; Yahoo mail does not open attachements I receive from people. When I select the attachement to download it, it begins to download and then stops, and with no explanation as to why the download failed. Can you please look into this problem for me and advise how it can be fixed? If this is not something which you can help me with can you please recommend who I will need to contact. Thank you, Dave

I am having the same problem.
I am using MS Vista, and have tried using both FireFox and Internet Explorer, with the same results, I cannot open my attachments (ie. jpg, wmv, wma, gif, etc). If I forward the email to a different client (ie. Hotmail) I don't have a problem opening the attachments at all. Also, I am able to open them on a non Vista system (my work computer is XP)

I have the same problem opening attachments from my yahoo mail, I am using Windows Vista. My computer does a virus scan and then asks me to download the file, at this time it informs me that it cannot open the file, but gives some very vague reasons why. I have sent several reports of this problem to MS with no response or solutions to the problem.

Click on attachment, window pops up asking do I want to open, save or cancel. I click on either open or save and nothing happens. For a millisecond another window pops up after selecting open or save.

Cannot open pdf or wmv files in yahoo mail. Wasn't an issue before, but for months now I cannot open them. It scans for viruses, doesn't find any, tries to open a web page and then I get the following error message: Internet Explorer cannot display the web page. Most likely causes: You are not connected to the internet (which I am or I couldn't be IN yahoo mail), the web site is encountering problems (but it happens EVERY TIME I try to open a PDF or WMV file these days), or there might be a typing error in the address. I don't have the option of saving it anywhere when I right click either. When I forward it to another e-mail address and access it from the same computer, I can open the file.

Hi Dave, Can you please provide more information. Specifically what Operating system are you using as this can result in specific issues, for example I get constant messages like yours from people new Mac OS X who think they're attachments are not opening when in actual fact OS X automatically saves clicked attachments to the desktop.
What kind of attachments? .exe (Windows executables), .doc (old Word format), and .dat (raw data files) for example will be blocked by yahoo as unsafe, if you are sure what you are being sent is safe ask the sender to re-send it in a .zip archive. Do you have a program on your computer capable of opening the attachment? If the attachment is an OpenOffice.org document you will need OpenOffice.org or OpenOffice.org converter for office on your computer to open it.
What security software are you using and how is it set up to deal with attachments, McAfee Antivirus for example is very very slow so it may be that an attachment will appear not to be downloading when in fact McAfee is just very very very slowly scanning it.
Lastly what internet browser are you using? Firefox for example automatically saves downloads to your desktop where as Microsoft's god awful Internet Explorer has various rules as to how to handle downloads.
As to who else to contact, the obvious answer would seem to be Yahoo! support. Although to be fare they are pretty bad at what they do.
**BloomerLJ** When you say your friend "made a file on my desktop" I think you mean your friend created a folder on your desktop don't you? Good on you for trying but that would require an e-mail client "rule" to be set up and dav_bar13 is accessing his mail via web access.

I had a similar problem with outlook express. A friend made a file on my desktop so that when an attchment comes in, instead of opening it I save it to this file and then open it from my desktop. I don't know if this can be down from yahoo but you could give it a go.

How do I attach photos to yahoo mail?

First, the photo must be saved as a file you can open on your computer.

Next, open your Yahoo mail account and click Compose. When the new email screen opens, type in the recipients and a subject just like any other new email you want to send. At the bottom of the screen [next to the Send button] click on the paperclip icon. Then browse to the file you want to attach & click open.

After the file becomes attached, click Send.

Mail From Yahoo

Yahoo Mail is a popular webmail service that allows people to create their own email username and have it hosted by the Yahoo network.
In addition to providing fast and reliable email, Yahoo Mail also allows you to send and receive large attachments.
If you use Yahoo Mail, and are having issues opening attachments, there are several easy troubleshooting steps you can try to get your Yahoo Mail attachments.
Sign out of Yahoo and clear your cache.
Since Yahoo! needs to access your cache to keep you logged in and to communicate with your computer when downloading attachments, a full cache can prevent Yahoo Mail from opening attachments correctly.
Go to your browser's "Tools" or "Internet Options" menu and then select the "Delete Temporary Internet files" command to delete your cache.
Reload the page.
lf you have had Yahoo Mail open for a long time, the page may have gone idle, and you may not be able to access your attachment.
Press the "Reload" (F5) button and then log back in to your account.
Ensure that the attachment is not corrupt.
If the sender did not finish uploading before they hit "Send" or there was an error during the upload, the file may be corrupted.
Ask the sender to re-attach the file and send it again.
Check the file format.
Some formats are proprietary and will not open unless specific programs are installed on your computer.
For instance, if you are sent an AAC file, you will not be able to open it unless iTunes is installed on your computer.

Email attachments

When Yahoo was facing bankruptcy they fired their CEO and replaced him with very smart 39 year old named Marissa Myers from Google. She did a lot of really good things and Yahoo was definitely showing a sizable profit. Unfortunately she felt that Yahoo Mail Classic was not as good as Google's Gmail and she decided to remake Yahoo Mail to be like Gmail. There have been many problems since then. People's accounts or lists of contacts have disappeared, attachments first couldn't be made and now that they can be made they can't be opened. Hundreds of Thousand of complaints were made in the first week. Right now it's not you or the person sending you the attachments - it's the constantly patching going on that has made it impossible to open them. I can't. Fortunately I also have a Gmail account and am using that until the dust clears. It's a real shame - Yahoo Mail Classic was much nicer than Gmail.

Can't get most of my attachments to appear

With the Web-based Yahoo! Mail service, you can attach to your email message a saved Web page or another document in HyperText Markup Language format.
When you attach an HTML file in this way, Yahoo! Mail won't display the HTML content of the attached file in the email message body.
To view the attachment, you must click the attachment tab above the email message.Yahoo! Mail and HTML
Yahoo! Mail is a Web-based service and it's fully compatible with the coding languages used to design and display Web content, including HTML and XML, Extensible Markup Language.
This means emails sent or received in Rich text or HTML format include clickable hyperlinks, graphics and other Web design elements.
However, Yahoo! handles emails with HTML attachments in a different way to email messages formatted with HTML.

About Yahoo! Mail Attachments
Like most email programs and online services, Yahoo! Mail offers an attachment feature for adding images, video clips, audio files and HTML document to email messages.
Some email programs display the content of the attached file in the email message body, but Yahoo! Mail doesn't provide this feature for any file attachment, whether it's an image, video clip or HTML document.

Viewing Yahoo! Mail Attachments When you attach an HTML document or another file to your Yahoo! Mail message, an "Attachments" button labeled with a "Paperclip" icon appears below the email address fields and above the email message body.
Clicking the "Attachments" button opens a pane containing a list of all files attached to the email. The email sender or recipient can open each attachment to view the files by clicking the file name.

Considerations

When sending a Yahoo! Mail with an attachment, always explain the content of the attachment in the main body of the email message.
A brief explanation will encourage the recipient to click and open the attachment to view the HTML document.
Bear in mind that many email services automatically block HTML attachments because of the security risk of opening HTML files, which can contain viruses, phishing scams or open Web pages with inappropriate content.
If you want to share a favorite Web page with a friend or contact, include a hyperlink to the Web page rather than a saved copy as an HTML attachment.

Opening attachment in my yahoo email

After logging into your Yahoo mail, click on the contacts. At the top you see Import/Export. You have to import the CSV file into Yahoo. Once that is done, things will be ok.
