I found a small black piece on the floor near my printer. I have 3 school age children who use this printer and attached Mac. The piece is covered in ink on one side so I am thinking that it came from the printer somehow. It is about 4 inches long by about 1/8th inch wid., and looks very much like a rigid black plastic twist tie if you could imagine such a thing. There are what looks like 4 tiny BB's spaced along the piece. I completely stumped HP support and it does seem to print and scan fine without this piece. It does, however repeately think new cartridges were just intalled and wants me to allign them. Any help would be much appreciated

I have never heard of that happen before. I know if they have been refilled they lose there effectiveness causing leaks to happen.

If the spring did not damage the carriage flex I would suggest just using some epoxy to hold the spring properly in place. If the spring did damage the flex (as shown in this picture) then you might contact HP and enquire about an extended warranty for this issue. In the US call HP at 1-800-HPINVENt.

LOL! That would be the little cleaning stick, used to clean the printer head, which is lodged in the lid inside
