The computer was on for at least one year and i never turned it off,until this past weekend ,when i was going out of town for three days i decided to give it a break.so, when i came back and wanted to turn it on, ,nothing.the green light on the mother board is on and when i push the power button,i see a very tiny light which is very hard to notice blinks every 2 seconds for 3 or 4 times ,but nothing happens.i disconnected all the wires from the back and pushed the power button for at least 25 seconds to take the static out ,but again ,no luck.that was all could do, so, if anybody knows how to fix this,please let me know.thanks.

I was having a look at a friend in works PC. Again a Dell Dimension 5150.. It also has a boot up problem (does nothing but orange light flashes) After already taking it apart and making sure the hardware wasn't broken I had a search and came across this! I'm glad I did because one of the front USB ports was damaged! and i'm pretty sure that would have been one of the last things i would have looked for!

To my surprise, I looked on the back of the computer and sure enough one of the USB ports was bent out of shape causing the short. I fiddled with it and as I moved it, the mother board came to life! The fan twitched and the hard drive made a noise (or what I think was the hard drive). I pressed the power button and it turned on! Good fix David.
Hi I had the same problem but I traced it to a bent pin in one of the USB sockets
the pin was shorting against the earth plate, hope this helps.
Hi dave the only thing that i forgot to mention is ,there is a very small tiny battery on the M/B which i took it off and i was suspicious that it is not working right ,so after i took it out ,i adjusted the negative terminal of it which looks like a very small fork and then put back in place and then discharged the power button for about 15 seconds and reconnected the ac wire without doing anything else until the computer turned on by itself. just remember ,i had to do the exact precedure every time that i was going to turn the computer on including to take the small battery off and put it back again.is kinda weird isnot?.worked for me,i hope it'll work for you too.good luck.
Take the Ac cord off the back of the PC, then take out the boards you have in the PCI slots. Then I would re-seat the memory. Turn the PC back on after re-seating the memory, but before putting the boards back in. See it it powers up.
If it does,put the boards in one by one. Then try to power up.
Word of advice, Windows needs to be restarted at least once a week so that it could recover its resources.

Last thing is to check the voltages on the power supply unit.
If this continues, It may be a intermittant power supply. A capacitor may not be charging/discharging correctly.

make sure that your RAM and Cmos battery are securely seated
Test all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions IDE SATA
the leads from your ((motherboard to your hard drive)) make sure they have a secure connection and are not faulty or just replace them they could be faulty
graphics card is seated properly with no dust in the socket you might have to remove it to check for dust
a computer needs power and data to travel through every working device and to its continue its cycle and to have and end to function
make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure make sure the connections and are not faulty even the electrical extensions or just replace them they could be faulty
a computer needs all electric current and computer data to travel to and through every working device and have an end to work properly click start right click on my computer so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error

Thank you all for help.i tried both solutions ,but unfortunately no change.when i disconnect and then reconnect the ac wire and then push the power button ,as long as the button is pushed i can see a flashing light every 2 seconds,but when i release the button ,there is absolutely no light on the power button and is completely blank.

today i went thru the whole process again,disconnected everything from the back of the computer and inside as joe asked me to do it and then pushed the power button for about 15 seconds as it was in rachelgeek23's solution and then put the ac wire back and boom,computer turned on,but when i tried it again ,same problem,then again pushed the power button for 15 seconds and put the ac wire back ,turned on again.so,i realized i had to do this everytime that i want to turn the computer on.
now i can turn the computer on with the above mentioned process,but the question is what if i turn it back off again ,i know i will get in trouble again until i do the process again and i want to know is this ok.or just go ahead and leave the computer on forever in order to eliminate this annoying process.
I have the same problem as kobra51 except when I tried his method it didn't work. The orange light would flicker every few seconds when I hold down the power button and the green light on the motherboard would be on, but nothing happened. Please help!
I shut down 5150 and all peripherals so i could disconnect the power at the breaker as i was changing an overhead light. When I powered everything up again the PC wouldn't boot, just a blinking light coming from the start switch. i shut down the PC every day and this the first time this has happened. i tried all the the basics and no luck.
same issues invovling power enable as system is booting up @ startup.
Exactly the same issue as mentioned. I had bent prongs within one of the front USB ports. After straightening the prongs, the PC came back to life. This was a tough troubleshooting experiece trying to narrow down the motherboard or power supply. Good Call!
I just fixed similar problem none booting on my Dell dimension 5150 .Amber light was keep flashing on I/O plate. I though first it was faulty mob but all caps was looks fine. first I remove I/O plate ribbon from mob and try that way but didn't help so Just give a try to change PSU and that was it start boot again. I guess some caps fail on PSU . Hope this helps to other people with similar problem.
