I have the same TV as jim y , an RCA 36" about 7years old. I'm trying to find out if he fixed his problem. I haven't had TV for a couple months now, not sure whether I should have it fixed or toss it. It was a nice TV, good picture quality, but it is broken.
Your problem is a bad sweep power supply or the horizontal sweep circuit has a short in it such as a bad horizontal output transistor as well as the high voltage flyback transformer. These are not problems that should even be concidered to be repaired or attempted to be repaired by an untrained person in solid state electronics. Please seek out a trained service person to estimate the TV for you as there are no user parts inside this set, and a TV set is not a place to be experimenting around inside of.
