When popping popcorn, two bright lights flashed and it began making a sound. No magnets were near or on the microwave.

The magnetron may be arcing, get warm soapy water and remove all food particals from inside of microwave oven until spotless, and check the hood for bare metal.

SOURCE: Magic Chef Microwave looses power when making popcorn

That does indeed sound like the mag is overheating and the thermostat is tripping, but it's probably not the steam.

Do you feel a good amount of air flowing through the vents?

If the cooling fan is not running or the air vents are blocked, that wil allow the magnetron to overheat.

If air flow is not a problem, then you may have a defective magnetron.

Assuming it's still under warranty, it would be best to let a Magic Chef-authorized servicer handle it.

Hey Guest let us know if you have anymore problems because our new oven still arced. It is fine if we cover the food to prevent spatter.

SOURCE: microwave popped and now does not heat

Okay, first we need to separate the situations. You were boiling water on the stove and had the range hood fan running to **** up the steam. Then you put something in the microwave to heat and you heard a pop and then zip-o.

The water on the stove has nothing to do with the situation, the fan you turn on is not part of the microwave, so it has nothing to do with the microwave.

The pop you heard and then the humming suggests the magnetron failed. You said you found a blow fuse and replaced it and still nothing, right? The magnetron is the most likely culprit...I would think it is safe to say that the magnetron shorted and drew enough current to blow the fuse.

Replace the magnetron and if that doesn't work, let me know here. Good Luck!

SOURCE: GE Profile Microwave - JVM2070SK02 - when turning

We see (and repair) this a lot. The problem is on the control panel, which we regularly repair nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid in about a week.

At our Web site, you can get details of our service, plus we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

This light failure often occurs when a bulb goes out and the filament shorts, or when the bulbs are removed or installed without first unplugging the oven from the power line. Either can cause such a failure on the controller.

Sometimes this will also affect the exhaust fan operation, too. The lights and fan can be inoperable or stuck on too.

Feel free to contact me directly (and please remind me of your full model number) for more information & help.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

Check your waveguide cover / spatter shield for grease or food particles. It may be arcing.

To help you further (with free advice), I would need to full model number and FCC ID number from the label on / in your microwave.

unplug microwave.
Take ALL dishes out of the microwave and do a proper check of the inside the cooking area. If you are sure that's ok put the glass dish back in if it has one.

Test that the oven and grill are still functional.?

Do they heat up? If they do then get one of those microwaveable bowls or dishes and put some water into it. Place it back into the microwave and do the check again on microwave heating.

Does it bang or spark again?
If it does and the other heating is OK then the Magnatron to me sounds as it's on it's last legs.
That does not mean you have to scrap the microwave if it is the Magnatron. as a new one can be purchased and installed.

Microwave made a loud popping sound and had a bright flash of light. Has done this twice.

That is most likely caused by a failing wave guide cover. It is situated in the cavity and protects the magnetron.
Most dealers keep or can easily get them.
Hope that helps.

On my LG wavedom microwave, when I was trying to warm milk the microwave makes some noise sounding like popcorn or something cracking and there is a blue light flashing inside the microwave.

Are you using a container which has gold trimmings on it.

Microwave (inside on right hand side wall) has a plastic cover. Behind this cover while popping popcorn there was bright yellow/red flashing/light, it started to melted the plastic cover within seconds....

You don't say which make/model microwave you have, but on every model I have ever seen the thing that sits behind the plastic cover is the magnetron - the bit that actually generates the microwaves.

Unless the microwave was a fairly top-end model, you might well be cheaper to just buy a new one.

Hope this helps,

SENSOR ERROR

Did it perhaps sound like someone gargling or growling into a coffee cup?

That's the kind of sound a magnetron often makes when it goes bad.

If you see flashing or arcing (sometimes more visible in a dark room) then there may be grease or food debris on or behind the plastic waveguide cover. It would need to be cleaned or replaced if it were burned.

If you or a friend decide to work on it, we have *critical* safety, disassembly, and troubleshooting info at our site, which is linked at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

Microwave nuked by popcorn popper, please help?

Sounds like the magnetron has failed. That gutteral sound is a classic symptom. I've described it to my customers as sounding like gurgling into a coffee cup. Dry popcorn is a very dry food, so not as much of the energy is absorbed. When that happens, more microwaves can reflect back to the magnetron and damage it. I'm surprised they don't mention that if and when you don't use butter. But if this is an older microwave, it may have been on its way out already. Not too many parts seem to be available for this Welbilt model, but your best bet if you want it repaired is to call their nuumber in your owner's manual. If it's older or a fairly simple counter-top microwave, then it would probably be more economcial to replace the oven.
