Computer cannot detect Camera

My computer does not detect my camera anymore. I cannot download pictures from my camera to computer. When camera is plugged into computer, none of the function buttons, including menu work. It appears to be frozen. The camera continues to take pictures and I am able to print up the pictures, I just cannot download them.

Error message says "cannot detect camera. Check connection to camera, then retry." It shows in the devices list and gives same error plugged into any USB port.

I am having this same problem. I just installed the canon software on my new laptop and the camera is not being recognized on the new laptop. I have uninstalled and reinstalled and tried all the USB ports. Nothing seems to work. I would appreciate any assistance.

I just experienced this problem and went round in circles for a few hours before stumbling on the solution. My camera, a Sony Cybershot, has 4 USB Connect modes in the Setup menu: PictBridge, PTP, Mass Storage, and Auto. The only mode that would work to bring up the Camera Wizard screen on an XP computer was PTP. Once I changed the setting from Auto to PTP, the camera was recognized and able to connect to the computer. Somehow this setting had got changed to Auto or Mass Storage and that evidently causes a problem such that XP does not recognize the camera.

I had the same problem and went to Canon's website and upgraded to the most recent version 6.1 of Zoombrowser EX. It started working immediately. If it doesn't work then uninstall the software, make sure it doesn't show up in device manager then reinstall the original software. Plug in the camera and see if you get the error. If so reinstall the most recent version and I'll bet it works

Can't upload pictures from camera anymore

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program such as Picasa.

Your camera can't get a virus. If you ever tried to transfer pictures from the computer to the card, you could transfer the code for a virus to the card but your camera doesn't have a computer operating system and can't be infected with a virus. A more obvious reason would be that when disconnecting your camera, you forgot to use the "safely remove hardware" function on the computer. That can corrupt the camera.

Won't download pictures to computer

Try uninstalling your camera, then reinstalling it.  to do this, right click on "My Computer" left click "Properties" in the properties menu, click on "Hardware", go to "imaging devices" right click the camera model, left click uninstal, then reconnect the camera and it should reset.  hope this helps!
