Make sure the switch for remote power or control at machine is on the right setting. It will arc but very faint if this switch is not on the right setting.

SOURCE: champion 8500 doesn't have full voltage underload

Sounds like you need a tune up. Check or replace spark plugs, air filter, fuel filter, carberator, and idle linkages.

SOURCE: speed will not kick up when arc is struck

There are CT;s (current transformers) that the transformer output runs through and the AC outlets which sense the current flow and throttle it up from the control board.
Also, Is the throttle linkage free , not jammed up??

SOURCE: Problems with welding with a Forney 180 amp. Arc Stick Welder

check your input power connections on the primary side of the welders transformer, then if its an infinite control welder check that control, otherwise if it's a plug- in selectable amperage check these connections,it sounds like the infinite control is getting dirty and not passing all the current it shows on the control, also double your O.C.V. on the secondary and see if its with-in welder specs

Check or replace ignition wire, spark plug spark plug coil. Run a cylinder compression check. Should have same compression on both cylinders. If not, burnt valve, or flat cam lobe.

I have a hobart champion 16 and it will barely arc it will not make a weld it went from welding fine to doing this.

Could be something as simple as worn brushes, dirty slip rings, or a bad bridge rectifier. If you know how to check them, these are all something you could fix. If it's anything beyond those, you're best bet would be take it to a repair facility. I repaired welders for 18+ years. (just an FYI)

Not generating power

The engine is not running the welding transformer. It may be a fuse, drive belt or gear wheel. Or the transformer is shorting out. Check these points in this order if the last one maybe you will have to replace the transformer. The transformer is 2 coils to stop them shorting out where normal electric wire is cover in plastic or rubber the coils are coated with enamel as are sum cooking pans. If this is damaged in any way it will short.
