Is my picture tube going?

My 27 inch Toshiba TV is about 10 years old and has lately developed a bar across the upper 20% of the picture. Some times the picture is perfectly clear except for a thin line across the lower part of the bar but on other occasions there is distortion within the bar. When text (movie credits) move through the bar they seem to roll under ( a distortion). Does this indicate that the picture tube is going? I notice that one can not control the horizontal or vertical on modern televisions.

Hi there yes this is a common problem with old tube tv's and yes eventually stuff seems to break down there is not alot you can really do about it to be honest ...my suggestion is that this is lifes way of saying upgrade ...this tv has done well ....if your looking to upgrade i would suggest going to a Samsung LA26C450 as a replacement television or if you are not so much a fan then a KLV26BX300 as a new option ,

Cheers

Where can I get replacement picture tubes for my Signature 2000 television set?

I would not think that they would exist now, Tubed televisions and monitors are very old technology and when I was working in the mid 90's there was almost none spare around.
What existed was put straight into the production line.
I have another concern that some of the last tubed monitors came with what I call an extra focus to compete with flat screens sharpness. This resulted in a flyback transformer that had three presets on it, those I came across had blown up their respective tubes because of over voltage applied.
It would be worth checking if yours has this development and if so then I would give up because parts will not be around.
If you have a blurry/soft picture due to low emission then a heater booster transformer to give it an extra 10 or 20% but they may not even exist now, if it is going bright or dark then that may be a sign of G2 voltage problems which is that transformer issue and destined to "pop"
You may be lucky but I would not bother, sadly a sign of the times as they say.........

TV Picture reduces to a narrow horizontal bar

The vertical sweep output section circuit to your TV has the fault. Might be an IC failure, or with some loose solder points at the solder terminals to this IC. As it will be very difficult to detect the exact dry-solder point, it will be best to resolder all the suspected solder terminals to this vertical output section, by applying a little more solder to each terminals, without making any solder bridge short in between adjacent solder terminals.

The screen has colored vertical lines and becomes to a dark black band about 6 inches of width. The tv is exactly two years old by today.

My 3-year old 52-inch Toshiba flat panel TV (Model # 52RV53U, Serial # AM409000295) developed a display problem (purchased Aug. 2008, manufactured July 2008). Vertical multicolored lines appeared on the screen just left of center. The band of thin vertical bars is 5.5 inches wide. The lines are about 1/16-inch wide. They are stationary, always exactly in same place. They over-ride any other picture on the screen (no transparency). They are there all time even with no video inputs to the TV after the unit is turned on. See picture #1. The TV works well in every other respect, but, obviously, it is annoying to watch the picture with the color band blocking about 1/6 of the picture.

I already swapped out the TCON board with no improvement and replugged the TCON board cables with no improvement.

Most likely it is the flat panel tab bond failure (panel made by Samsung). Further solution updates will be on my Facebook page.

My Sony trinitron tube Tv 36" seems to be going (its 10 years old

no ....the tube will end up after 20 yrs in 10 yr old sony...
it is worth if u fix it. randomly going black means...horizontal driver trans former is the problem..or any loose contact with the 110 volt supply to that transformer,,or any loose contact with line o/p transformer.. (horizontal driver transformer may be gone
then tv behaves like this) if any other parts gone tv wont come back.... there may be a loose contact call a service pro..

Jumping screen

If you have dropped the TV or it has been bumped significantly you may damaged part of the tv tube section where the electrons are beamed. Sounds like a damaged tube to me. If this occurs when you play a videocassette, you need to adjust the tracking of your videocassette player and the screen jumps will go away. I don't have that problem now, but on the bottom portion of the screen there is slight curvature distortion. In the late 1960's Sony TV's made the industry stand on its ear and could stop a shopper for clear across the showroom to take notice. Keep in mind our televisions are almost 20 years. It is "unheard" of for any tvs to last that long. Mine has lasted that long before developing the problem I posted on this e-bulletin board.
