For the past few months - anytime I turned the tv on I would here a high frequency noise and then it would fade away, I was able to live with it. Tonight I turned the set on and the screen went dim and a high frequency noise began to emit from the back of the unit - not coming from the speakers. I've powered the set on and off multiple times - the issue doesn't resolve itself. Also tried different power outlets. Any ideas?

If the circuit breaker was tripped, more likely the fuse inside the TV power supply might also be blown. If that is the case there might be a short circuit in the power supply components, more likely on a diode or transistor/mosfet.
Contact these website to see if they have the parts for your plasma.
Good Luck.

The reason the tv is turning itself off, because most TVs have a "Protection Mode" that turns the unit off when it detects a failed part inside the tv.
The most likely the tv has a power supply related problem. The most common thing to go out is the circuit board that supply power to the screen. Commonly called a Backlight Inverter Board.
I can't say it's 100% the problem because I can't actually look at the tv over the internet.
Being that the TV is under a year old, it should be still under manufacture warranty. Last thing you want do is void the warranty by opening up the TV. Here's some info to get you started on the warranty:

If it not under warranty and If you have some electronic experience, you can purchase a Service Manual over the internet and diagnose the source of the problem and fix it. The Service Manual will give you circuit diagrams, test points, and part# lists. Usually, cost under $20.
I hope I shed some light on the subject for you.
