We will be watching either tv or a dvd and all of a sudden a black square takes up almost the whole screen so you can't see the program. We have to switch channels so it will go away.
Meknow is right I think. To turn off your closed captioning hopefully all you need to do is get into the setup menu. You didn't list what kind of TV you have so this is a generic solution. Go into menu and in a setup menu there will be a closed captioning way to select to turn the box off.
The reason sometimes you see it and sometimes you don't is because some programs have closed cationing and some don't.
And because you are only seeing a blank box and not closed captioning is because there are different closed captioning standards. CC1, CC2, etc.
So if you can find the menu item that allows you to turn off the closed captioning, it would be a good start to solving your problem.

Yes ,just turn off the closed caption. The black screen that you've seen is for the text massage, but since you had no massage written in the text box, that's why you see a black square cover your screen.

I had this problem tonight and the closed captioning was not on. It was a black box so big that only about a 2" border of the screen was showing. I was using an RCA switch box and it hasn't happened again without the switch box but I honestly don't think it was the switch box. I think since our tv is days out of warranty it's decided to die on us.
