without knowing age of unit, I suggest replacing the motor. Sounds like the armature is worn the bearings and is moving inside the windings of the motor. I would do that first before moving forward with any other repairs.
Should like your unit is working fine unless this is constantly happening. If this is a constant thing then condenser coil if dirty, check thermostat setting
unplug the ref remove the back panel place a fan behind the ref to cool the compressor when you can place your hand on the compressor then you can clean the condenser coil and plug it back up make sure the condenser fan motor is running
When you heard the click and the compresor stops ,check if it's very hot , if yes the compresor is of on overload and this could happend because 1 the condenser coil is dirty ,2 the relay is bad or 3 the compresor has a problem .Also check if behind the kick plate there's a timer (some units have it there or next to the cold control ) that could cause a problem too.
Either you have abad comoresor or abad compresor relay ,i will try to replace the relay first(if you don't have away to check the compresor) wich is cheaper (about $20 for the part)If doesn't work the compresor is burned or stuck.
