Sounds like your carb needs the fuel/air mix adjusted..uses all the gas at high speed but has excess at low speeds...find your adjusting screw and at med throttle slowly screw it clockwise until the engine starts to sputter then back it out until it starts to sputter again then continue to do this until you reach ideal mix where it runs the best it can..then go slowly through the throttle up and down..when set..unjust your idle speed screw to your ideal idle speed..if this dies not fix ..carb will bed cleaned or rebuilt. Good luck.. Note always push or pull your throttle handle slowly to position avoids gas load up causing sputter and backfire.

SOURCE: Engine appears to run normaly until PTO is

Check you float in the carb I had one a few years back and it was partualy plugged cleaned it out and everthing worked fine. Also is the PTO binding up or bearings going bad putting an excessive load on the motor.

SOURCE: My 18 hp vanguard is

if the diaphragm in the fuel pump gets a small hole in it , it will still run, but **** fuel into the crankcase, the fuel pump is serviceable, and easy to rebuild, a new diaphragm kit is fairly cheap at any local saw shop, just remember to take the model number off of the engine so they can look it up, and sometimes its a good idea to take the pump in with you to match it..

SOURCE: I have a 23 hp

It is starving for fuel. Replace the fuel filter first thing. Clean or replace the air filter. Also purchase a can of Seafoam or Techron fuel treatment. Follow the directions on the can and put some in a full tank of fuel. After running this full tank if you still have the problem then you may need the carburetor adjusted or cleaned out. I would advise you to seek professional help in accomplishing this.

Briggs & Stratton 23 HP VANGUARD. The right side runs cold?

Question edited for clarity and make sentences.
Question moved form Cars and Trucks to make model category.

My guess is you have a leaking valve. The compressed air in the leak down test is closing it. Remove the heads and lap the valves. Check the valve stems are true and not sticking. The variation is compression 50 v 30 is too great.

My 50 ho 4 storke was stored for over a year it started like a dream and idles great but when you advance the throttle to mid range it seems to de tune and misses like crazy until you bring her back d

It sounds like the high speed passages in the carb are gummed up. If you have not done so already, you should probably rebuild the carb.

Check the govenor spring to see that it is not stretched out or popped off...there should be a colored spring on the throttle plate where the throttle lever connects to...also, there are several holes in the plate where the spring attaches...these hole will set the sensitivity of the govenor...you may need to make it more sensitive to hold the engine speed high when engaging the blades

It sounds like your valves are out of adjustment. Your starter will bog down if it is out of adjustment and stop at the compression release.
So just take your valve covers off and set your valve lash to
.006 intake
.008 exhaust
