I might be confused by your wording, but I think it is asking you to open iTunes and "connect" to the iTunes website. Be sure that you have an internet connection.
I would also check that you have the most current iTunes version. to do that start the iTunes program. Under the help pulldown you will see "Check for Update"
Itmaybe a battery problem...if you think its not a battery problem, you may want to try a software upgrade/restore...if your software version is already the latest one, backup all the ipod contents before you restore...you will find the restore option in the summary tab in itunes.
Your battery is most likely dead to the point where it can no longer hold a charge, which is the reason that when you unplug it from the computer, it dies instanly. Batteries are pretty cheap going up to about as high as $25 and if you get it done at a ipod place, installation should not be that much.
All you have to do to the ipod is go to settings, wifi and make sure its turned on in the same place you should see a list of wifi networks you can connect to just tap the one you want and the ipod will do its thing your done, but if you done all that and you ipod doesnt go online says connected but wont access the net, my guess is the wifi router you mite have some prob with that, make sure the internet ethernet cable is pluged into the modem plug not the numbered slots after this you should be good to go unless your wifi modem is new if so some req you to plug it to your computer via ethernet cable to program it first! Hope this helps
