I just put in a new Asus M3N72-D mother board. A new AMD Athlon 64 x2 5600 processor. New Crucial Ballistics DDR2-800 (4-Gig), and a new 450W power supply.
Put it all back together this weekend and when I power on all I get is fans running (all case fans and CPU fan) the green light for the hard drive flashes a few times. The green lights for the CD/DVD roms flash a few times (but the roms will not open when I push the open/close button). I get nothing on the monitor and now sound (no beeps or beep errors or anything). The fans run for 20 seconds or so and then it power off for about 2-3 seconds and then automatically power up again and does the same thing fans run, lights flash, roms will still not open (when I push the open/close). No video and no beep codes or anything. It will continue to do this over and over again and the only way it will stop is when I turn off the power supply switch.
I have tried clearing the BIOS, even tried my old processor (AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800), tried one stick of ram all the usual stuff. It always does the same thing.
Note under product I had to list a different board the M3N72-D that I have was not an option.
I am leaning towards "a bad mother board". Any body agree or have another opinion?
Remove all external devices. except the memories.
turn on the PC.
it if comes on insert each of the external device one at a time, till you come across the one that is causing the problem.
if it doesn't come on, remove the memories. and swap the memories. if it still doesn't come on, remove the memories. and see if the BIOS come sup. if it doesn't, then you have motherboard problem.
go back and check all connections. make sure the connectors are in right orientation and not pins are missing.
The best thing I can offer at this time is to get the diagram or pin call out for the mother board power input, and the pin out put from the power supply, match them up.
the other suggestion is, you can run the mother board w/o any devices.
I had run the motherboard outside of the box, when I can't get anything to come up. The reason for that is, I do find (not always) the ground for the board some time Short out the board, or the board is so close to the case, it creates a magnetic short (around the power input).
the answer to you question is no. the machine will give a beep or 2, if it motherboard is running. if the motherboard is not up, you wouldn't get anything.
try this, let me know if you get anything with the motherboard outside of the box.(I mean completely).

I have built several gamming computers, one with Asus and had good luck. What I do have is a power supply checker that I got from Tiger Direct that I use alot. To me a 450 watt PS sounds a little small . Sounds like it cant regulate the voltage, expecially the 5 volts. I have a master power supply (650 watts) that will hook up to any board or hard drive. I try it when I have this kind of problem. The only thing I dont like about Asus is that they have so many pins, so I would double check the pin settings.
Did the power supply come with the case.. If it did, change it. I have never had any luck with those. I really think they use 2nd hand ones for kits. Just my opinion GOOD LUCK
It does read all the voltages and it not under load. Im sure it would have an internal load. Im starting to think like you, being the board. Keep me informed.. [email protected]

frcs68 I have tried everything I can think of with the memory sticks. Switching memory sticks, trying with only one stick, no memory at all, and even tried one of my old 512 sticks that works in another rig. No matter what I have tried I still get the same results described in my original post (No BIOS, no video, no beep errors) just fans running and blinking lights. I tried booting with the CPU fan unplugged and feeling to see if the CPU heat sink would start to warm up and nothing so I don't thing the processor is even firing. Wondering if it might be the processor I put my old 3800 in and the same thing it does not warm up at all. It sounds like you may also think it is the board so maybe this re-enforces that opinion. From what I hear it is not real uncommon to get a bad board "out of the box". I have just never had one yet. By removing all "external devices" are you referring also to the hard drive? This is something I have not tried. I believe even without a hard drive / operating system it should still boot up to BIOS correct? In other words the minimum components needed to bring up BIOS would be the motherboard, CPU, Video card and PSU (of course). Is this correct? If the problem was the memory would you typically get a beep error? Especially with the memory completely out if the motherboard were functioning properly I should get a beep error correct? If the problem were the video card I would get a beep error (one long, two short...I experienced this one before.lol). What if it was the processor? Would I get a beep error?.
Butch1964 I had a Hiper 580W power supply in this rig originally thinking it could be the problem I put the new 450W PSU in it. I know the 450 is not ideal but it was what I had to try in it. When I take a look at the PSU calculator on the ASUS site with the board and everything I have hooked to it (including the GeForce 7600 video card) it calculates a minimum of 350W. Not saying I would rely on a 350 or even a 450 to run it all the time but I would hope it would at least boot it up. I am curious what is the best way to check the PSU? You mentioned a PSU checker that you got from Tiger. I will check into that. Does it read all of the pin voltages? Does it check it under a simulated load or anything like that?

I tried to get the board to run outside the box as you suggested. I sat it on the static guard bag that it comes in and had nothing connected to it except the processor (tried it with both the new 5600 and the old 3800) and the power supply hooked up. I also tried it with ram and with out ram. Still nothing. Looks like it is the board. I will have to RMA it to NewEgg.

I got a look at the power supply tester in action. Since I am a "cover all my bases kind of guy" lol, I took both power supplies to a local computer store and they were kind enough to test them for me. Both checked out good. So when I get my new board I can put my 580W back in my rig. I'll keep the 450W and build a rig for the kids.
Thanks much to you both for taking the time help. This is only my third build and the first two times I just put everything together and turned it on and all was good. I have never had to do much trouble shooting before this one. I have certainly learned a lot and a couple of things to try in the future. I hope to do one more post on this one...That will be to say all is good after replacing the board.

I got the new motherboard in and everything works great.
I am going to do another build soon (for the kids). I hope that one will go as smooth as the first two I did (got lucky...no troubleshooting involved), but if not I learned some valuable info on this one and will be ready to do some trouble shooting next time.
