Unplug the power then unplug the 24 pin power connection from the mother board and take paper clip bend it so you can insert it into the holes where the green and the black wire are next to each other, Next you will need a multi meter. Set the multi meter to read dc volts 20 take the red lead and put it into the purple wire hole of the 24 pin connection and the black lead in to the hole with the Black wire on the 24 pin connection. the reading on the Multi meter should read 5.0 volts if it does not and you get a reading of 6.01 or higher then the Mother board has been burnt out and you will need to replace the motherboard and power supply I have been a onsite tech for E-machine for the last 5 years and this has been an ongoing problem with the power supply.

u can buy power supply testers, just a device you plug the power supply into, or try a new power supply. but if nothing is happening no fans etc theres a good chance its just the power supply.

Gateway yellow power button, nothing starts, no fan, nothing. opened up computer and see mobo led light is lit. newton ps has a test button. tried to test with various components plugged in and the test...

Power supply has several voltages. Just because the 5v power is active doesn't mean all the voltages are OK. You need to have the power supply tested for 12v and 3.3v. A quick test is to unplug all the wires from the power supply. There is a single green wire on the motherboard main plug. Connect (use a bent paper clip) that green switch wire and any black wire. Plug in the power supply and it should run (fan starts)

I have a media center cpm 1180n desktop, the green light on back of PS is blinking and when I disconnect the mobo is steady green however when I connect the mobo back to my MB and press the start bottom...

yes it sounds like the power supply is shot, you can get a replacement at any computer shop for around $40. i would put in a 400w or 450w that way if you add another hard drive or opitcal drive it wont be a strain on the new power supply

My pc won't power on

Sometimes a defective / uder rated power supply is causing this. Defective power supply cannot provide the required load leaving your motherboard on standby mode (led green light) Try and check this first by replacing the power supply . Memory is another cause so if you also have spare you can run tests.

Dell dimension 5100 won't power on

might be a problem with the power button...try exchanging the power adapter and the reset adapter in your motherboard...this would become:

RESET BUTTON: as power button.

view your manual on where to find this adapters in your board.
