For data protection, I would recommend an app called LEO Privacy. Because it takes the exclusive data encryption techonology. It can help us lock apps, bluetooth, wifi, ect and it can help us hide imges and videos, find back our lost phones by sending messages to lost phones and it can take a selfie of intruders once they input the wrong passwords. If the phone has a GSM radio it will only work with GSM providers such as AT&T and T-Mobile.
If the phone has a CDMA radio it will only work with CDMA providers such as Verizon and Sprint.
This cannot be changed. This is why an iPhone 3GS will never work on Verizon and Droid will never work on AT&T.
Since you say you have SIM card you phone is most likely a GSM phone. CDMA phones have built-in, non-removable SIMs.
You need a "SIM unlock". Since this is not entirely legal it is unlikely that a legitimate business will unlock your SIM. Your best bet is to surf the Internet for instructions. I have seen people sell unlock instructions and services on eBay.
Regardless, proceed with caution. The process of unlocking phones always runs the risk of turning your phone into a paperweight.
