Set default to black and white

I want to force using color by my team "optional" and set the printer to black and white to keep costs down. I keep being told that a driver will fix this yet on the Xerox website I'm unable to locate it. I have gone to the SysAdminGuide and tried to set it up as a password and changed it to black and white in the General Setup but so far no luck with that either. Ideas?

I guess what I mean is that I want the default to be black & white but I can't find a driver to control access to color printing. The setting in the general setup doesn't change it either.

Printer A10922 will only print in black. Color cartridge renewed 1 year ago and has been working well.

  1. Check that your color cartridge/toner is not empty or blocked.
This is the least likely cause of the problem, but an important check to make. Most color printer drivers and/or software provide functions to verify alignment and color output. Consult your manual or open your printer driver by clicking Start : Settings : Printers and right-click on your printer's icon and select Properties. 'Browse' the Properties dialog for options that perform system checks.
  2. Look for a 'Print only Black and White' option.
Open your printer driver's Properties dialog (see above) and look for a color option that uses black only. Uncheck it or select an option that enables color. Some color printers have different resolutions for color and black-and-white (usually higher resolution in black-and-white). Some applications (not Origin) will force a printer to use a quality mode that affects this option, and if the resolution is forced to its highest the color output may be disabled.
  3. Enable gray scale printing.
Some combinations of printers and operating system versions can lead to a miscommunication between Origin and a printer driver. Under these circumstances, Origin may 'think' it is dealing with a black-and-white printer when it is actually using a color printer. Beginning with 6.1, the Origin Print dialog displayed one of two messages depending on the print capabilities read by Origin:
    1. Enable color as gray scale
This check box displays for color printers
    2. Use simplified colors
This check box displays for black-and-white printers
If you are seeing the first checkbox and you are using a color printer, then checking the box should tell Origin to send all color information and let the printer handle any conversions that may come up. In earlier versions of Origin there was a rather cryptic "Print color on black and white printers" checkbox which did the same thing.

Changing ink default to BLACK

Not possible.
Epson uses the black cartridge mostly, but also adds color to the black printing in order to keep the color inks from drying in the print jets on the printhead.
They also make lots of money that way...

HP Officejet 7110 won't print black and white w/o color cartridge. I never print in color; yet the machine will not print in just black and white without having a color cartridge with ink in it. Why would...

I've used HP Inkjet/Officejet printers for years. Many HP inkjet printers also use the color cartridges to some extent to create 'black' in slightly different shades, that can be un-noticeable to the eye.
To print using only black ink, try doing as follows:

When you click on 'Print' from your browser, the printer properties (or preferences) page opens.
You must first set the printer to not print in color (color is the default setting). Then you must set the printer to use 'black ink only' by using the 'advanced settings' as follows:
1. In most browsers there will be a box on the lower right of the printer properties page that says 'advanced'.
2. Click on that box to get the advanced settings page to open.
3. Once open, the feature you need to check is called 'print in grayscale'. (It is usually at the top of the list) It is set to 'off' by default. Just click on it and a menu box drops down and one of the choices is 'Black Ink Only'.
4. Click on that and then 'save' or 'apply' those settings.

Then your printer should be using black ink only.
You will probably have to set that each time you want to start a new printing job, as the default settings on these printers are tilted toward using the color cartridges in order to sell you more colored ink.
Also, if you are using Windows 10 and the 'Edge Browser' that comes with it, you cannot get to the 'grayscale' option. So either use a 3rd party browser, or use good old Internet Explorer, (which is still included in Windows 10) to open and get to the page you are trying to print.
I hope this helps. If not, go to HP.com and type in the model number of your printer and then do a search from there for detailed instructions for your printer model (which might be slightly different than what I have shared here.

HP Deskjet, Set to Black & White; but still prints with color!

Bronze, hopefully this is a logical issue: Assuming you're on WinXP > Go to Start>Control Panels>Printers (and faxes).
Find the printer in question in the list (maybe there's only one or 2 listed) and 'Right-click' on the icon > go down to "Printing Preferences" (about second/third down the list).
In here you will be able to set the printers default settings. I'm not 100% familiar with HPs printing dialog, but there maybe a setting there for either 'Black & White' and 'Grayscale' (albeit it should be greyscale, anyway...) if you choose black and white your printing will not have any mid-tone, so if there's a choise, choose 'Grayscale'.
You can set other features here which will become the new default each time you go to print something - personally I set to 'Draft' or 'Fast Draft' mode by default, that way when I just print out rubbish, I am saving "lots" of ink and if I want something in good quality, I change it at time of printing.
Now, there are some programs and files that "remember" you last print settings, so if you've used a colour print setting previously, that file may still pring in colour, even though the new defaults are mono (black & white). So, print using the new defaults and save the file when finished. It's unlikely the case with OpenOffice, but, I don't know. We'll tackle that as we get to it.
So, if that has not cured the problem, please let me know.

Setting default

  1. Go to START>PRINTERS AND FAXES
  2. Right-click on your printer and choose "Printing Preferences".
  3. Choose the Color tab and set it to "Print in grayscale"
  4. You can also set it to use the b&w cartridge only for true black & white prints.

I want to print in black and white only

Dear "mmmom" if your OS is Windows go to control panel, click on printers and fax icon, now go to setting of your printer (right mouse key on it) and set it to black and white. Now your printer is always set to black and white and for color printing you have to set printer to color from application (word, excel,...) you are using.

Can I set default printing to black and white for color laser printer?

Yes. Any printer's default options can be set as desired. Open the printer's properties (Start/Control Panel/Printers/right click the printer and left click Properties), and change the setting as you wish, then click OK. Those settings should be used each time you use the print command, unless you change the settings for that particular print job.

Hope this helps, and please rate my advice, good OR bad.

Good luck!
