Remove the chuck dc970 - Dewalt Drills

To remove the chuck from a Wilmar KFF-6 drill, follow these steps:

1. Turn off and unplug the drill.
2. Locate the chuck key that came with the drill.
3. Insert the key into the chuck and turn it counterclockwise to loosen the jaws of the chuck.
4. Remove the chuck key from the chuck.
5. Grasp the chuck with one hand and hold the handle of the drill with the other hand.
6. Turn the chuck counterclockwise to remove it from the spindle.

If the chuck is stuck and won't loosen, you may need to apply some penetrating oil to the threads and let it sit for a few minutes before attempting to remove the chuck again. You can also try using a rubber mallet to gently tap the chuck counterclockwise to loosen it.

There is a collar that controls the torque of the driver just behind the chuck. Rotate it until the drill icon lines up for full power.

I don't think the motor is serviceable that way. At
DeWALT DC970 Parts List and Diagram eReplacementParts com you can find the motor and pinion for $35 plus shipping and then get the entire drill working again. Had the same problem with one of mine and it was an easy fix.

With the chuck open as far as possible, look within the jaws of the chuck for a bolt or screw head that attaches the chuck to the shaft. Remove the bolt/screw and remove the chuck. Some chucks can also be screwed onto the shaft, so look for signs of threads at the base of the chuck. Otherwise, once the bolt/screw is removed, tap along the outside around the chuck with a plastic hammer to loosen the chuck. Penetrating oil will help.
Take your chuck with you to a "big box" type hardware store, where a replacement should be available. Any well stocked hardware store should be able to help you. I have found that the somewhat smaller hardware stores are usually staffed with knowledgeable persons, and getting a replacement ordered is easier. One is more likely to be stocked in the larger stores.
The name brand of the chuck isn't as important for a replacement as is the correct shaft size and style of fit.

Set the drill to reverse. Hold the chuck, press the trigger and open the drills chuck to it wide open position. Now,, take the correct size allen wrench and insert it into the back of the chuck to remove the screw. Turn the screw clockwise to remove it. Notice I said clockwise, just the opposite of what you might think. Hold the chuck with your hand or a pair of large vise grips and press the trigger to unscrew the chuck from the drill. Rotate it counterclockwise to remove it from the drill. Reverse the procedure to install the new chuck.

To remove your chuck, open the jaws of the chuck fully, but don't open them so tight that they lock in the open position. Remove the screw inside the chuck. Spray the inside of the chuck with penetrating oil. Tap around the edge of the chuck, while pulling it away from the motor.
It should come right off, with a little effort.

Place drill in vice with chuck in vice facing up . Clamp chuck lightly but with enough force to hold firmly.
put allen wrench in chuck and lightly tap down to make good fit to allen screw head.Clamp chuck jaws down onto allen wrench lightly to hold wrench steady. Take piece of pipe to end of wrench,10".
These chuck screws are tight. Hammer clockwise until screw brakes loose.Open chuck completely and remove screw.Chuck is threaded to spindle shaft . Place allen wrench with long end facing out of tool in chuck and tighten chuck securely. With hammer tap allen wrench sharply counter clockwise ( normal thread.)

I have a DC927 and a DC926 that I removed 1/2" Rohm Supra SK key-less chucks on. This process is pretty simple. Put the drill motor in 1st gear. Put the clutch ring in drill mode and not in driver or hammer. Reverse or open the chuck all the way. Hold the chuck firmly in a vise and give the drill a good POP counter clockwise. The last step can also be done with a pipe wrench by placing the drill on a work bench and turning the chuck counter clockwise. Continue to un-thread until the chuck is removed. The replacement chuck must have the same mounting process and mechanism. Put a few drops of locktite on the threads and thread the replacement chuck back on. Tighten the chuck using the vise or pipe wrench. Place the short end of an allen wrench in the chuck and tighten down on it. Placing the drill on a work bench, strike the allen wrench with a mallet to finish tightening and locking down the chuck. Congratulations, you have just changed out your chuck.

First open the chuck jaws and remove the LH chuck retaining screw. After that find a bent handle allen wrench about the size of the chuck. Put the shorter end in the chuck and clamp down on it. Put chuck on a block of wood or workbench with the long end at about a 30 degree angle so you can hit it counterclockwise with a hammer. It might take a couple hits but it will come off.

1.) If the unit has this screw place the chuck key, with the chuck facing toward you, into one of the holes on the right side of the chuck. Strike the key in a clockwise direction with a wooden mallet or similar object. This will loosen the screw inside the chuck.
2.) Open chuck jaws fully. Insert screwdriver into the bottom of the chuck to engage screw head. Remove screw by turning clockwise this is a left-hand screw.
3.) With the chuck facing toward you place the key into one of the holes on the left side of the chuck. Using a wooden mallet or similar object, strike the key sharply in a counter-clockwise direction. This will loosen the chuck so that it may be unscrewed by hand.
There is no way to stop the motor from turning.
It may require several attempts to loosen the chuck

2.) Insert the short end of a 1/4" or larger hex Allen wrench into the chuck and tighten. Facing the tool strike the long end of the hex wrench sharply counter clockwise as it is a standard right hand thread. This will loosen the chuck so that it may be unscrewed by hand.
There is no way to stop the motor from turning.
It may require several attempts to loosen the chuck
