This problem started all of a sudden. The sound quality is degraded doesn't sound like a decent condenser anymore and there's terrible distortion on "Sss" sounds and plosives ("p", "t" sounds etc.). The mic has been reduced to a kids plastic toy mic! Could it be condensation?

I had the same issue. The sound would fade and then go dead.. The preamp in the device I was using wasn't strong enough and also the phantom power seemed too low to sustain the microphone. After adding a TUBEPre by PreSonus, all of the issues went away and I was shocked to hear how good this microphone really is. Was the issue low phantom voltage/? or a lousy preamp? All I know is , after adding a preamp all of the problems went away.This has to be the best microphone I have tried in this price range.

If you are satisfied with Shure products I would recommend that you check out their condenser microphones.All condensers are more fragile than other microphones. Get someone to look at your Rode first in case it is not trashed and can be fixed as they are good mikes. AKG is another brand I would recommend.

Microscopic dust particles can cause problems if mics are left out for long periods. It is common practice to put a plastic bag over it if leaving on a stand. My best advice is to put it in the airing cupboard for a day or two to dry out any residual moisture, which may be sticking the diaphragm to the back plate.

Your Phantom power supplied to it probably got turned off at the mixer or preamp.
